V.F.D. is a secret organization in which surround the Baudelaires throughout the books. The first mention is in Book the Fifth. V.F.D. used to be an organization that put out fires and basically tried to stop all bad in the world. Until around when Kit Snicket was just young, Beatrice Baudelaire, (the Baudelaire's mother) and Lemony Snicket helped eachother steal a very important sugar bowl from Esme Squalor. The sugar bowl contained horseradish, which is the most affective antidote for Medusoid Moselium. This act started off the schism that caused the organization to seperate into two groups. One of volunteers and one of villians. It is unknown why Beatrice and Lemony wanted the sugar bowl. Count Olaf is on the villian side of the schism. He helps set the fires, while people like Jaques Snicket and Beatrice and Bertrand Baudelaire, Aunt Josephine and Uncle Monty try to put them out. Many things for V.F.D are unknown and not explained anywhere. There are many headquarters for both the good and the bad sides. I used to read be ubsessed with these books and i came to the conclusion that V.F.D just stood for V.F.D It was the name of an organization that split into good and evil. They used V.F.D to stand for whatever was nescesary considering they are masters of disguise and going undercover and such. They had many codewords such as Volunteer apoy Department. But i dont think it had any exact meaning. And it was never ibingiay in the books.
