First, a quick plot description: Sixteen-year-old twins Akiko and Akito Himenokouji haven't lived together for six years, and they're both excited to be reunited. However, things get a bit madami complicated when their differences in motivations are revealed - Akito is interested in Akiko only as his sister, but Akiko wants madami than just a sibling relationship...
Story: 3.5/10
Just to make things clear, unlike the majority of people, I don't really look upon incest (consensual, of course) with disgust, and never have. If two people are related and in love, I don't really care what they do, so long as they don't make horribly deformed mga sanggol or something. Therefore, I was certain I could form a completely unbiased opinion about OniAi.
Unfortunately, even to one not necessarily inclined to reject incest, the first episode is clearly flawed. The first half essentially introduces you to the two siblings, and explains how they're going to be living in some sort of dorm together, and attending some sort of school together. It also introduces Akiko's infatuation with her brother. A good ten minutos are wasted while she tries to get him to peek at her in the shower, sleep with her, and "reward" her with kisses.
Then, inexplicably, Akiko's perfect little life with her brother ends when three other girls start living with them. And for one reason or another, they all want to make passionate pag-ibig to Akito as well. These reasons are unknown. They are all members of the student council at this mysterious school. The reasons for this are also unknown. Note: All of this comes out of nowhere. It may be that they skipped some time, and plan to cover how all of this came to be in the form of a flashback, but what they're doing with it is so unclear that it's far madami confusing than clever. The episode ends with a skirmish over which of the four girls gets to sit susunod to Akito at dinner, Akiko saying "As long as there's love, it doesn't matter if he's my brother, right?", and absolutely nothing being accomplished.
Animation: 7/10
OniAi's studio is Silver Link, the same studio responsible for making Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu as visually appealing as it is. However, hoping for the bright mga kulay and unique background art in Baka and Test, I was in for a bit of a letdown. Don't get me wrong, the character designs all look good, there weren't no major problems in the movement department, and the computer animation wasn't blatantly obvious. It's the background art. It's very bland. Oh, and there was also quite a bit of bizarre lighting, which made for some scenes where the visuals just seemed a bit... Off. Like one of the girl's head having a huge black line outlining it, separating it from the background completely, while another girl's head is practically melding into the wall. I can get over it, though. Overall, its animation is very easy on the eyes.
Sound: 6/10
Music? Er, the opening... They didn't actually ipakita the visual part this first episode... I think it may have been in there as BGM... Well, I suppose that's a pretty good synopsis of how memorable that song was.
The soundtrack fairs better than the opening, fortunately. The tracks were all entertaining enough to listen to at the madami boring parts of the show. There were even a couple that actually jumped out as me as being something I'd actually enjoy listening to. The ending seemed like a typical one for this sort of series, but it isn't too overblown obnoxious, nor is it understated to the point that it's completely forgettable. I enjoyed it.
As for the voice acting, the ipakita actually has quite the cast so far. Though the twins are voiced sa pamamagitan ng people relatively new to the the job, OniAi features both Midori Chihara (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) and Eri Kitamura (Angel Beats, Toradora), as seiyuu. I haven't heard enough of the actual voice pagganap to judge it yet, but I haven't noticed any obvious problems with it so far.
Characters: 4/10
The girls look pretty, but none of them have impressed me so far in terms of personality; they all came off as pretty generic harem stock in this first episode. I did think Arashi Nikaidou was a tad bit madami interesting than the three other girls, though.
The theory that OniAi is just another typical harem ipakita is further enforced sa pamamagitan ng the fact that Akito, the male lead, is about as exciting as a potato. So as of yet, not really impressed, but maybe their backstories will add a little flesh to the characters' personalities... That is, if their backstories are ever revealed...
Overall: 5/10
Needless to say, OniAi's first episode was pretty weak as far as first episodes go. However, that doesn't mean I'd openly discourage anyone from watching it. Depending on what they decide to do with the susunod couple episodes, it can still manage to salvage itself, and though I might be being overly hopeful sa pamamagitan ng saying this, it may actually turn out to be pretty good.
I'm not sure if OniAi is going to end up being a full-blown incest, or if Akiko's pag-ibig for her brother is simply another plot device for a few laughs while the characters ultimately bull-shit through however many episodes there are going to be, but the latter seems much madami probable. This isn't a ipakita I can force just anyone to watch, nor one that I desire to force anyone to watch, but if you've already been baited, check it out. Who knows, you may even get hooked!
