Yes it does bring me closer to the culture and so does manga on top of that I've learned so much about the culture from anime and manga which was the beginning reason why I started looking into Japan and what it was like-with the prefectures and the language the history and everything-so for me it does!

I think you guys are slightly misunderstanding the question... Yes, watching anime helps you to understand Japanese culture, but only a few small aspects. You have to realise that every culture is diverse and there is more to Japanese culture than watching anime and looking up a few facts about Japan. Speak to me when you have learned fluid Japanese, learned to use chop-sticks comprehensively, are able to drive faster than the police, embrace their way of eating, and many, many other intricate details that the Japanese people have perfected over many years. Basically, that is how I feel about it, though I know you are all just giving your opinions. XD
