if it's about awatara spirits, include some that were on the show. (misc. tips) Short, attention-drawing sentences help build up suspense and fear. Also, develop the readers' attachment to the characters at the beginning of the book so that they feel madami scared when something bad happens to them. If you want to focus madami on the spirits' lives, then plan out their soceity - make up something that makes you feel for the spirits. For a tone that leads into detail about their society, make the main character sort of rebellious or questioning about the establishment. Then have one truly evil spirit that the main character goes against the spirit to destroy (mabye part of it goes on about how to kill or eliminate a spirit) him/her. Include, if this applies, real people that are in touch with the spirits, or one character that can communicate with them.
