Critical Analysis of Twilight Tanong

Has anyone else noticed SM casual use of abuse in these novels?

The whole Edward Bella thing is bordering emotional abuse
So is kampanilya Jacob
Rosalie"died" because of Rape/abuse
Esme Cullen was abused in her first marriage
What do you guys think?
*
Esme was never abused, she tried to kill herself because she had a miscarriage not because she was being abused

Esme's baby dies of a lung infection a few days after he was born. She ran away from her husband, before she knew she was pregnant, because he was abusive. She killed herself because her baby died.

Yes, your point? Abuse happens all the time in the world, of course it would be mentioned.

Thats not my point. And yea I kind of know. Lived threw it. So yea it happens all the time. My point in asking is simply does she use it TO casualy? She has swarms of teenage girls thinkng that that kind of relationship is cool because Bella and Edward. I mean seriously

Well, it's not exactly Meyer's fault if those girls choose to jump to that conclusion. See this vid for more: link

It may be off-topic, but it has the same point. Just replace Rihanna with Twilight, and replace Parent's telebisyon Council with Antis who believe what you stated.

Not her fault, but still it bugs me.

Yes, it's an obvious theme in the book. A lot of books have this theme.

Meyer didn't glamorize abuse.
Bella felt unhappy when Edward effected her emotions.
She was annoyed with him whenever he controlled her physically to stop her from doing something.
Jacob was unhappy when Bella used her pag-ibig for Edward against him.
Rosalie died after being abused.
Esme killed herself because she was abused
Sam felt guilty every time he looked at his fiancee's scarred face.

Meyer doesn't make abuse look like a good thing.

oh I don't know... i didn't get the feeling that the abuse was actually a theme.. sometimes it felt merely like it was just something used to advance the plot whenever Meyer writes herself into a corner, other times it didn't make sense at all... for one thing, did the so-called abusers got their comeuppance in the end? for example, when Jacob kissed Bella forcibly, didn't he even boasted to Charlie what he did and didn't Charlie replied, "good for you." tell me where the justice is in that. and what about Emily? It was all about Sam's feelings and Sam's guilt. why was Emily's side never explored? after all, she took the abuse. why is everybody sorry for Sam? and what about when Edward or Jacob blames Bella whenever they act like jerks towards her? they tell her it's her fault for being irrisistable. isn't that some kind of an abuse too? and was there justice in how Meyer handled it? just asking...

Forgiveness is also a theme. Everyone doesn't have to be a asong babae to people who bother them. Jacob wasn't looking for Charlie's approval, he was looking for Bella's, and she didn't approve. Jacob didn't tell Charlie he forced her. If Charlie knew Jacob sexually harassed his daughter, he probably wouldn't have been happy. Sam's attack was an accident and deserving of forgiveness. Emily loved him and it's easy to forgive someone you love. Neither of them ever blamed Bella. You conveniently forgot to mention Rosalie's attacker. They died as a punishment

therein, I guess, lies the thing that bothers me. they forgive and forget so easily. there's no justice for the characters. and the focus is on the abusers, the sympathy of the writer appears to be on the abusers' side with nothing on the abused's. as for Rosalie's rape, my problem with it was that it was used so lightly, like an afterthought to her character, because i didn't get the feeling that it affected her..

and Emily. don't forget Emily. Leah too. You're right. Meyer takes these things too lightly. what implications did Rosalie's rape had on her character? I didn't see any. It was like, Rosalie just needed a back-story, so Meyer threw in the rape thing. And also don't forget Edward and Jacob's utter disregard for Bella's own free will. (no that should be Meyer's utter disregard for free will) and every time they make Bella feel guilty about things that she shouldn't feel guilty about.. and Bella's passive acceptance of all of these. ugh.

so yeah. you're not the only one who notices.

Rosalie's didnt really effect her, and thats sort of what brought this to my attention. She uses it to lightly. No one can live through that and not change. As for Bella's free will, I see the whole thing as sort of an anti-femmanist thing.

Yeah. I know abuse happens all the time, but seriously. Little kids read this too. And they glamourize the whole abuse thing. Emily was attacked sa pamamagitan ng Same, but she still stays with him. Same with the Bella/Edward/Jacob thing.

Sam never attacked Emily, she was just standing too close to him when he changed into a werewolf, it was a complete accident
