Why are so many people calling Twilight "thesaurus rape"?

It's a term to describe when authors use unnecessarily long or obscure words when a madami common word would have been the obvious choice. It gives the impression that the may-akda felt they needed to sound madami intellectual and looked the common word up in the thesaurus, assuming that all the words listed are interchangeable which reflects an ignorance of the nuances of language.

Example from Twilight: "Neither of us were what you would call verbose." She meant talkative. Verbose is out of place because it implies the very kind of pretentious wording that Bella is invoking.

From what I've heard, Stephanie Meyer used a bunch of synonyms to describe Edward. Like he's gorgeous, sexy, amazing, beautiful, stunning, you get my point. I guess she overdid the thesaurus usage.

well, "for me", its some term which means being literally unskilled, so, for example, an may-akda want to use the word 'lovely', but that may-akda wanted to sound deeper so that may-akda will check the thesaurus for some synonyms and "maybe" that may-akda will come up with 'alluring' ,and it sound way deeper than 'lovely'..

and the "rape thing":

well, the may-akda in my "story" is literally unskilled, and that may-akda will want to sound deeper and madami fluent so this may-akda will "rape" the thesaurus, meaning, use some synonyms from it even its quite unfamiliar..

that's my point of view.. err..

Stephanie Meyer raped a thesaurus.

She used the thesaurus on words that didnt need it and didnt make as much sense as if she didnt use it.
There were too many big words in that book and she only added them in to make the book sound smart....definately didnt work

She described Edward's chest as incandescent. SO hot that it glows hmmmm. I support the usage of thesaurus greatly but don't use them to sound 'smart' and always check the dictionary to make sure you are using the word correctly

I went to the thesaurus and found a listahan of synonyms for "rape". Maybe we can agree that one of these terms would work better.
