I pulled out my phone and sent Damon a text. It was just past three in the morning, and I couldn’t take it any longer. I hadn’t slept a wink and it was getting to me. I needed some kind of release from all the mess I’d put us into, and he was the only way I knew to get out.
After waiting five minutos for him to reply to my text, I got anxious and annoyed he hadn’t answered. I picked up the phone and called his number, praying that he would pick up soon. My nerves couldn’t handle it.
“Pick up, pick up,” I chanted to myself. “Please pick up!”
“Elena, you realize what time it is, right?” His groggy voice rang in my ear.
“Thank you for finally picking up the phone.”
“Do you need something?” He wasn’t at his best when you awake him from his sleep for a conversation. Other things, definitely, but not a conversation . . .
“I was wondering if I could come over . . . now. You have any beer? Please tell me you have beer,” I wasn’t a heavy drinker, no. But I had drunk enough to know that a little buzz took the razor sharp edge off your nerves for a while.
I heard the smile in his quiet, short lived laugh. “Of course, cupcake. Be sure not to get caught sneaking out of the house,” I swore I heard him wink through the phone. He hung up and I got my stuff together. Now was my segundo dilemma: How was I supposed to get out of here without waking up Jeremy? I silently cursed our squeaky, hardwood floors.
Still, I had no choice but to try and sneak downstairs. I let out a sigh of relief when I made it to the bottom, never making a sound. I tiptoed to the door, still being careful. I slowly unlocked the deadbolt, and creaked the door open.
As soon as I was on the highway, I felt free – even powerful. I successfully avoided thinking about Stefan, and focused on what was to come.
I pulled into his backyard – just as a precaution in case Stefan just happened to drop sa pamamagitan ng – and saw only his room light on upstairs – a slow smile spread across my face. My puso thudded in my chest and I darted for the door. Instead of knocking, I twisted the knob, just to find it unlocked. This wasn’t unusual when I told him I was coming over, so I wasn’t worried he was leaving his house unlocked.
I walked in the familiar house and looked around – no sign of him down here. I went to the fridge and grabbed two beers before heading upstairs to find him.
I decided to play with him a little. I knew exactly where he was, but I peeked in every door on the way to his room. “Damon,” I called repeatedly. I finally reached his room, the dim light of the lamp making him look madami mysterious than ever as he stood susunod door his dresser drawer. I had caught him shirtless, putting away clothes. Ironic.
“I know you own a shirt. Why don’t you wear one sometime?”
“You’re in my house, drinking my beer. Watch it,” He threatened. “And besides, I never sleep with a sando on. You should know that sa pamamagitan ng now,” He winked. I walked to him and handed him his beer.
“So I guess you told Stefan?”
I sighed. “Yea, I called him and told him I was sick.” We walked over to his kama and sat down casually.
“I knew you would. Always taking the easy way out.”
“I don’t think you have any room to criticize. You’re just as bad as I am,” Of course, I naturally defended myself.
“I am,” He paused for a few moments. “Elena, you don’t pag-ibig him,” He spoke quietly.
I rolled my eyes. “Damon, you wouldn’t know pag-ibig if it slapped you on the face.”
“I know enough that if you pag-ibig someone, you’ll do anything for them, tell them everything. You don’t do that for him, Elena. And you definitely don’t pag-ibig someone if you cheat on them with their best friend.”
My mouth was hanging wide open as he finished. “Damon, I –” tears filled up and threatened to run over as what he sinabi sank in. “You don’t know what you’re talking about,” My voice was harsh.
“Oh I don’t? Then why are you almost crying over here? My lovely speech, or the fact that you know I’m right.”
This time, I couldn’t stop them. “You’re right,” I sobbed. “There, I sinabi it – you’re right! I know you’re right, and it kills me. I need him, Damon. he keeps me sane. I know that if I left him for . . .” I stopped myself before I sinabi ‘you’ “someone else, my world would turn upside down. I need some type of normalcy. And . . . I need you, Damon,” I confessed sweetly.
He shook his head in frustration. “Cut the shit, Elena. You want one or the other – believe it or not, I’m tired of being played sa pamamagitan ng you. I’ve watched you do this for a taon now. I need you just as much as you need me, but it’s not fair to watch you wallow all over Stefan all the time. It’s time to chose, Elena,” His shocking blues eyes were filled with fire. I stared into them, his presence mixing with the serbesa and causing me to be lightheaded. I had stopped crying now. Silence followed and the air between us electrified. My breathing was coming faster and my palms were sweaty. Finally, I couldn’t take it any longer. I leaned in the little puwang we had allowed between us and kissed him with all I had. My arms wrapped around his neck and my hands went straight to his hair. This was nothing new, but each time, it felt like the first time. You’d think I’d be used to the feelings I had when I was with him sa pamamagitan ng now.
Slowly, painfully slowly, I pushed him back on the bed, successfully never breaking the kiss. Damon’s hands were traveling up and down my back, occasionally grabbing the back of my neck, reminding me of how strong he was. He was the one in control here, and I knew it. He had the power to stop us any moment he wished. I was his when we were together like this.
We were interrupted sa pamamagitan ng a hard knock on the door. At first Damon ignored it, but it got louder. Whoever it was knew that he would answer. He slowly stopped the halik sa pamamagitan ng cupping my face and looking into his eyes. I knew what he was thinking, so I groaned and rolled over, very unhappy we were interrupted. “Don’t worry about it, I’ll be right back,” He told me as he kissed my neck. I took off my shoes and made myself comfortable in his kama as he attended to the door.
“Have you seen Elena?” Stefan? Shit!
“It’s four thirty in the morning. I’ve seen no one. Well, besides you, that is,” You could hear the annoyance in Damon’s voice. It made me smile.
“Jeremy called me and sinabi he heard the door open. He went to check on Elena, and she wasn’t there. Her car isn’t there, either,” Wow. He really sounded concerned about me. Excitement was quickly replaced with guilt and worry. I wonder what he would say if he knew where I was and who I was with.
“Are you sure? She keeps it behind the house, remember?” He was playing cool, as usual. pagganap dumb.
He hesitated. “No, I . . . I didn’t check there, no. But she’s not in her bed, she’s no where in the house. We looked for her already.”
“I haven’t seen or spoken to her, man. I don’t know what to tell you but just calm down, and look for her in the morning. I’ll help tomorrow, but it’s no use tonight. Ok, just go tahanan and try to get some sleep. Tell Jeremy not to worry. If I know Elena, she’ll be tahanan in no time,” Damon sinabi confidently. Yes, I admit, he is a wonderful liar.
“Yea, I guess you’re right. Sorry for bothering you at this time of morning, I just went into panic mode.”
“That’s what best mga kaibigan are for. Now get out of here before I call the police.”
I heard the door shut and breathed out a huge sigh of relief. Damon came through the door and was running his hands through his hair, obviously trying to decide what to do.
“So . . . Does that mean I have to . . . leave? And go home?” I frowned and crossed my arms.
He stood leaning against the threshold for minutes, looking me up and down. “You don’t have to leave. I’m pretty sure he’s going tahanan anyway,” He sinabi to me, obviously still conflicted and undecided.
I got off the kama and walked to him and placed my hands on his chest, laying my head on his heart. It was the most calming sound I had ever heard, madami calming than the ocean or the rain. As from instinct, he wrapped his arms around me, completely engulfing me in his amazing scent. He was going to kill me; he did everything right.
That morning, I woke up in his arms. We’d fallen asleep on his bed, still intertwined with each other. Seeming that we were both still full clothed – well, except Damon’s sando was off – meant that we hadn’t gotten too far. I was basically laying on tuktok of him, my hair strewn across his god-sculpted bare chest. He was still sound asleep, his breathing even. I looked to the clock – seven in the morning. I’d only had three, well, a little less than that, hours of sleep. I had to get tahanan as soon as possible, before Stefan and Jeremy started their useless ‘search party’. I hated leaving Damon like that, but if I wanted to keep this undercover, I had to. My head was pounding, and I made a mental note not to drink ever again. I slowly got out of his bed, careful not to disturb him.
I couldn’t stop myself as I was about to leave – I went to his laundry hamper and took one of his plain white t-shirts that he wears all the time and sculpts to him so well. Just for keepsake…
I hoped in the car and revved down the road, hurrying to get home. I was in luck – Jeremy was still knocked out in his bed, which meant they hadn’t gone to extremes trying to paghahanap for me, and it also meant Stefan was still at home, in his own bed. Speaking of beds, I climbed into mine, but I couldn’t resist the urge to be back in Damon’s. It felt empty without him with me. The sun was just beginning to rise when I drifted off to sleep.
