Barnabas initially rejected Julia because she was a modern woman and she wasn't 18. But as the series progressed, he cared for her very much. Stop disparging the actress please, it just plain rude.
Also, even though it never is developed, Julia had a Lesbian feel about her. Kathy Bates does too.
Grayson was in her 40's, that was old in the 60's. Barbara Steele was in her 50's, that was old in the 90's. But in 2010, 60 is the new 40. Meryl Streep is a great actress and I think she can really bring the part of Julia to life. Meryl is very pretty and I think they need that. I think Julia has to be a little older but still pretty so it'll look right when she tries to get it on with Barnabas.
Other than Meryl, Emma Thompson, Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore would be good. Kathy Bates would be OK, but I don't really know. Kathleen Turner would have been good but she really let herself go. Kate Winslet, Holly Marie Combs, Doreen Jacobi would be too young. I like Helena Bonham Carter a lot, but it'd be Todd and Lovett all over again.
I'd like to know about that lesbian feel comment myself. I never got that vibe from Julia. Maybe (slightly) from Parallel Time Hoffman regarding PT Angelique, but that wasn't REAL time Julia.
As for as the age thing, I don't see any reason why Julia has to be under 50.
Why does Julia have to be under 50?
The thing with Julia is there was always that feeling of hopelessness. She loved Barnabas, but deep down inside, she knew she could never capture his heart.
Actually, I'd like to see Helena play Crazy Jenny, if she's in the movie.

Before you say that Meryl Streep is too old, Julia was ALWAYS portrayed by an older actress.
Sigourney is 61, but she could definatley pass for her late 40s/early 50s. She also has that same acting style that Grayson had. Since JD is older than Frid was when he started the role, it makes sense to make Julia a little older too. I think Sigourney Weaver would be a welcome addition to the world of Tim Burton.

Also on this website, DS is listed, link. Pleas, let it be true!!!!!
Helena isn't right for Julia. She doesn't have that authoritive feeling to her. Sigourney Weaver on the other hand is great at playing the 'tough chick' kind of roles.
Portraying Julia, I'd rather have an actress who is 60 and could pass for late 40s, early 50s, then an actress who is in her early/mid 40s and could pass for mid 30s.
As for Helena Bonham Carter, please Burton, put nepotism aside for once and actually do the film right!

hopefully in a few years there will be another DS film with Judy Davis
On IMDb, Helena Bonham-Carter is no longer listed as being a part of the film. From what I heard, she dumped DS for Great Expectations.
