I think Meryl Streep is a phenomenal actress - with a wide character range..it would be very interesting to see her take on Julia Hoffman....and Johnny Depp.

I love Susan Sarandon and Meryl Streep, but they are both a little old for the role of Julia. They're in their 60s, not their 40s. Cate Blanchett is early 40s, I believe. Not too young.

Blanchett is a fine actress but Julia has to be older, there has to be a logical reason why Barnabas rejects her love. Streep has that kind of feel and look for the part of Julia. Even if she is 60 she doesn't look it! I still say Streep for Julia (Tim Burton I hope you're reading this!)

I'm confused. Why does Julia have to be older? She wasn't in either of the series. Grayson Hall and Jonathan Frid were about the same age (their 40s) on original DS, and Barbara Steele and Ben Cross were close to the same age in the revival series. Julia just wasn't a sweet young thing like Josette, Vicky, Maggie, etc.

Grayson Hall was 2 years older than Frid--see her biography or even wikipedia. She was born in Sept 1922 and Frid in December 1924.
Barnabas initially rejected Julia because she was a modern woman and she wasn't 18. But as the series progressed, he cared for her very much. Stop disparging the actress please, it just plain rude.

It's sad that so many people are close minded when it comes to reimaginings! I doubt very JD will leave it alone considering he paid out the wazoo to acquire the rights! I want to see DS continue for years to come and a new movie will only lead people to see where it all started with the original. I thank GOD for the 1991 remake. It lead me to DS fandom and the original show which I love! I think Star Trek fans are much more open minded!

qb2bu picked Meryl Streep:
Actually the main reason why Barnabas rejected Julia is because he didn't trust her at first. Here she was saying she can cure him of his vampirism and he's been a vampire for over 170 years. He agreed to her experiments because he wanted to be cured, but he kept a leery eye on her. Even though the experiments initially failed, Julia slowly gained his trust and they became good friends, by that time, I believe Julia got over her romantic feelings for him. Another reason is that he was still hung up on Josette and wanted to replace her via Maggie and then Victoria, who more closely matched what Josette looked like than Julia.

I agree more with harpomarks and qb2bu. I picked Cate Blanchett, although I really wish Susan Sarandon were younger. She has such large, magnificent eyes like Grayson Hall did. I think Barnabas' early rejection of Julia was a combination of things. He didn't trust her initially, she was older than his image of the perfect woman (Josette), and she was an independent, educated, and opinionated woman (something he would have had no experience with, coming from the 18th century). Later on, he came to care for her deeply and was always saving her from other vampires.

Most of these women are beautiful. I prefer a woman who is strong and not a classic beauty. Kathy Bates fits this and would make a much better Julia than a beauty, even if she can act like Meryl can.

I chose Cate Blanchett. I'm in agreement with some of the posts above. I've never seen the Julia of the original series as any older than her 40s. She was just older than the Maggies and Vickis and Roxannes, etc that they were always pairing Barnabas with. Barnabas didn't trust Julia initially because she knew all his secrets and was not a docile, easily manipulated miss, but as the series progressed he grew to care for her deeply and couldn't have been more protective of her.

I have a question: How did Julia have a lesbian feel about her?

Grayson was in her 40's, that was old in the 60's. Barbara Steele was in her 50's, that was old in the 90's. But in 2010, 60 is the new 40. Meryl Streep is a great actress and I think she can really bring the part of Julia to life. Meryl is very pretty and I think they need that. I think Julia has to be a little older but still pretty so it'll look right when she tries to get it on with Barnabas.

Other than Meryl, Emma Thompson, Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore would be good. Kathy Bates would be OK, but I don't really know. Kathleen Turner would have been good but she really let herself go. Kate Winslet, Holly Marie Combs, Doreen Jacobi would be too young. I like Helena Bonham Carter a lot, but it'd be Todd and Lovett all over again.

Well, technically, Julia never did try "to get it on with Barnabas." She simply loved him quietly, and protected him and tried her best to save his ass from his many impetuous actions. I can't remember her ever even flirting with him. Of course, it was a different time forty years ago. I doubt if she would be so restrained today. lol.

I'd like to know about that lesbian feel comment myself. I never got that vibe from Julia. Maybe (slightly) from Parallel Time Hoffman regarding PT Angelique, but that wasn't REAL time Julia.

Looks like the age issue is kind of a hot topic in this poll. I guess I have to agree that I would like to see Julia played by someone in her 40s, or someone who looks that age, since I never saw Julia as being any older than that. Of course, they could go with someone who looks really young like in the (unsold) WB production where Julia was played by Asian American actress Kelly Hu. To everyone who says they should make Julia a sweet young thing like in the WB pilot: did you ever consider that WB didn't buy it because it sucked??? Come on! The WB pilot was the most wretched excuse for a remake ever! And making Julia young and beautiful defeats the entire purpose on why Barnabas rejected her! He wanted a younger woman in her 20s, if you have her in that age group it would make him a hypocrit of the highest order.

Sigourney is 61, but she could definatley pass for her late 40s/early 50s. She also has that same acting style that Grayson had. Since JD is older than Frid was when he started the role, it makes sense to make Julia a little older too. I think Sigourney Weaver would be a welcome addition to the world of Tim Burton.

DSCOLLINS picked Susan Sarandon:
As much as I love HBC, her as Julia will basically be Sweeney and Lovett all over again. It's stail! Burton needs to broaden his horizen with casting the leads. JD as Barnabas seems crazy but it might work. Depp has a tendancy to be over the top, but I think he'll do OK.

I'm kinda worried about the new film. So many people are calling the script "funny" Seth Graham-Smith said they wanted to make Barnabas funny. I'm really worried.

On IMDb, Helena Bonham-Carter is no longer listed as being a part of the film. From what I heard, she dumped DS for Great Expectations.

I have it on good authority--from a source who hasn't been proven wrong yet--that Helena is still playing Julia. The IMDB thing is most likely a glitch.

I'm interested in seeing Helena as Julia. I'll probably be sorry, but I'll wait and see

Sigourney Weaver and Helena Bonham Carter (who already played her) are three choices.
