I found this in my notes for my English class... I figured I'd share them with you here.
In Classical times, heterosexuality, or the pag-ibig of a man for a woman, was considered to be "an animalistic urge to be slaked quickly only for the purpose of reproduction" (Henry Staten, English 202 instructor) while "platonic love" or the pag-ibig of a man for another man, was considered idealistic and "above the beasts."
Such close mga kaibigan were in fact called "lovers," like Hercules and Hylas. To fall in pag-ibig with a man was the "proper" thing to do at the time, and signified a wonderous thing.

Imagine that you are in a boat. There are other people in your boat. There is also one person in the water. Allowing this person to get onto your bangka will not sink the boat. Everyone could easily fit comfortably. But still, there is a person in the water.
Now, if this person was only in the water for a short time, then yes, saying, "Hey, guys, lend me a hand onto your boat?" is probably exactly what she would do. But imagine this person has been in the water for hours. And imagine that it was other people in the bangka that pushed her in there. Not you, of course. You didn't push her in. But...
