What No One Tells You: Maternity Leave Is Boring
As someone whose face elicits at least one "what\'s wrong?" a day, I\'ve always been fascinated by people with resting LOL-face. Actress Dianna Agron for example, makes a Lakers game look like an Amy Schumer show—granted, sitting next to Schumer herself might help. "The photographer tells whatever story they want," Agron says when we meet at a recent event for Dr. Jart\'s Dermask collection. "If they catch you when you\'re smiling, you look like a happy child, and if they get you when you\'re yelling, you look like a psychopath."
veteran might appear all "happy child" on camera, she\'s had her ups and downs.
. "27 was a really hard transitional year," she says. "I lost a friend. Work was slow. All those things they say about heading into your later 20s all rang true." Now at 29, "I\'m happier than I\'ve ever been in my life." Agron is in love—she\'s seeing Winston Marshall of Mumford & Sons—and enjoying newfound creative freedom in her acting career. "I don\'t have time for dwelling too much. I have the most fabulous girlfriends and the most fabulous man," she says. "We all have problems, but for the most part, what\'s stressful today probably isn\'t going to be stressful tomorrow."
So how can I fake "happy child" face when I\'m having a 27 day? Agron picks up a cup of popcorn and tosses a little handful in the air, volleying the falling kernels with her chin, and I follow suit. Soon enough we\'re tossing popcorn like confetti and having Lakers game-level fun. Once we\'ve made a sufficient mess, Agron reveals some of her beauty secrets, a few external steps to inner tranquility and genuine happy face.
My friend Dave Stanwell has been doing my blonde for a while. I just feel like it\'s so temperamental. I\'m so impulsive, and I\'m realizing more and more that I\'m like my father in this way. My dad, I remember with everything, would be like: "I need a new suit, now. I need a haircut, now." I swear that\'s where I get my impatience from.
When I cut my hair to my chin, I\'ve never felt sexier in my life and I\'ve done it a few times now. ...You get up in the morning and kind of style it, but not really. I also found it very attractive to see the guys that were attracted to that hairstyle. Because I think, traditionally, guys are attracted to long curls and Disney princess haircuts. There\'s nothing wrong with that, but I was very fond of seeing men that loved almost a boy cut.
I double cleanse because it doesn\'t matter what product you use, you have to do it twice. The makeup is so permeated in your skin. Right now I\'d much rather use a tinted moisturizer because that\'s all I need. I think dermatologists are wonderful and lovely and can really help determine what you need and what you\'re lacking, but I really don\'t have the time for it.
Last night I had a girlfriend come over and we both picked a mask and drank red wine and watched a movie. You can do it while you\'re reading a book or doing the dishes. You can do it at home. You don\'t have to go to an office, and wait for an appointment, and sign a form. So, that\'s what I like the most about being really proactive with your skincare. If you do it the right way, you can avoid all the red tape. And that makes me feel good because you do have to be relatively responsible for your job. I have to be on camera.
