I'm pretty sure he's suppose to be based off a Tyrannosaurus-rex since he has almost the same body shape as one and also T-rexes are considered to be the king of the dinosaurs and are very well known. just like how Agumon who may not be a king but he certainly is well known and is pretty much the mascot of the series.
