Early concept art of Belle and the Beast
Early concept art of Belle and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast; often considered the magnum opus of the Walt Disney company was released on November 13, 1991. As most people know, it is the only traditionally animated film to petsa to have garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. This may have been due to the approach to this film. It was so unusual for an animated film; having a screen writer, pagganap director, flawless score, elements that were typically reserved for high-budget live-action films. So much care and detail was put into this film that entire books could be written about it. However, like my nakaraan two artikulo I shall focus solely on the creation of the film’s heroine, Belle.

The story of Beauty and the Beast had been abandoned sa pamamagitan ng the original Disney creative team in the 1950's. One of their many problems was they felt that in the classical story written sa pamamagitan ng Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumonte, Belle (who had two selfish sisters) was too boring and too reminiscent of Cinderella. When the segundo generation of Disney writers picked it up again, efforts were made to set Belle apart from her nakaraan princesses and so they turned to leading ladies from novels written in the midst of the Romantic Era such as Little Women and Pride and Prejudice.

Katharine Hepburn in Little Women (1933)

A common false notion is that Belle was artistically modeled after a younger Katharine Hepburn. Unfortunately, this is NOT true. Linda Woolverton, the screen writer says Belle's "personality" was largely based off the character of Jo from Little Women played sa pamamagitan ng Katherine Hepburn. Katherine Hepburn herself was never used as a physical reference for Belle but undoubtedly some of her essence seeped into the character.

Overseeing the visual disensyo of Belle was assigned to animators Mark Henn (who also had supervised the designs of Mulan and Jasmine), & James Baxter who animated characters like Rafiki and Quazimodo and who would later tumawid over to Dreamworks and animate such characters as Sinbad (Sinbad the Sailor), Tulio (Road to Eldorado), and Moses (Prince of Egypt). While both animators focused on the look of Belle, Baxter contributed most to her mannerisms and dancing scenes.

The two animators figured they'd take a new approach to Belle and try to make her madami “European” looking. In order to find what that entailed they turned to European mga model and mga aktres like Vivien Leigh and Audrey Hepburn. Audrey Hepburn was also used for Aurora but her rounded features were Nawawala to the angular style of the film but now ideal for Belle. Actress Sherri Stoner who had modeled for Ariel returned as the life action reference.

Henn and Baxter even turned to classical artworks sa pamamagitan ng artists like Bernini. Unbeknownst to most, Belle’s look is quite indicative of classical Baroque style, a period mentioned in the film that coincided with America’s Colonial Era, hence all the ponytails.

As for Belle's mannerisms, Baxter found his inspiration in the artwork of one of the fathers of Impressionism Edgar Degas. Degas was a French artist who is particularly known for his subject matter of dancers. This sparked Baxter to observe how trained ballerinas naturally walked and carried themselves and incorporated that into Belle. Throughout the film she walks with a dancer's turnout.

It was proposed sa pamamagitan ng Art Director Brian McEntee that color was to play an important role in the film as well as the seasons and weather. The seasons would be a metaphorical reflection of the characters emotional journeys much like in Bambi. In everyone's lowest emotional point it is winter or raining and as they grow it becomes spring. In regards to Belle's wardrobe, McEntee opted to utilize the psychological impacts of mga kulay to suggest Belle's mood.

In the first half of the film, Belle is dressed in blue. Blue is often associated with discontentment, loneliness, sorrow and it is no accident that these coincide with Belle’s feelings whenever she wears that dress. As Belle and the Beast's relationship progresses, Belle is seen in a Green dress, a color that incites calmness and relaxation. Then, during the song "Something There" she wears Pink which is popularly known for its association with young love.

Yellow, however, is the color of happiness and joy which brings us to her iconic gown. This dress has been seen before. It was directly inspired sa pamamagitan ng the royal toga worn sa pamamagitan ng Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday. While the film was shot in black and white, publicity and editorial shots reveal that Miss Hepburn's dress was a golden yellow. Belle's toga was ibingiay the rippled palda since the original disensyo was deamed 'too plain'.

In addition to Audrey Hepburn, Beauty and the Beast share several similarities with Sleeping Beauty. Sleeping Beauty was made due to the success of Sinderella which had madami or less saved the Disney Company from bankruptcy in the 1950's. The case was very much the same with Beauty and the Beast and the Little Mermaid in the late 80's early 90's. It is only fitting that both films end with the same dance sequence.

(Though most likely due to Beauty and the Beast's pressuring deadline.)

Belle has become undoubtedly one of the most popular of Disney Princesses and rightfully so. She's a well written three-dimensional character. Probably the easiest to relate to, she is just a misunderstood girl living a humdrum life who wants more, and like so many people, she doesn't entirely know what 'more' was until it finds her. In the end, Belle's character is an ideal role model for girls everywhere teaching us an invaluable lesson to look beyond a physical exterior and see the beauty within; that true pag-ibig knows no boundaries.

Snow White: 16th Century Germany
Though the movie never explains where they take place, it is sinabi to be set there since it was based off the Brother’s Grimm.

Cinderella: 19th Century France
Disney’s first film ever set in France though not explicitly. Evidence is that the words like ‘mademoiselle’ ‘Château’ and Tremaine is a French surname.

Sleeping Beauty (Sleeping Beauty): Most likely Late 14th Century France
While some people argue that it’s set in either England or Germany, the movie NEVER explains where they took place though I have many evidence why it was believed to be...

Hello Disney Princess Fans! First let me apologize for being a bit late getting the artikulo up this time. I'm sure you're all familiar with how busy the holiday season is, and due to that I got pretty far behind. Also, I would like to thank everyone who helped with the article, as I could not have done in alone.

Anyway, before we get started let me give you a brief run down of the Meet the DP fans articles, in case you happen to new to the club and/or unfamiliar with them. These artikulo have been done in past sa pamamagitan ng a few other users to showcase some of the current Disney Princess fans. Now, obviously,...

I wrote this artikulo years nakaraan for the first ten princesses but now with Beyonce's kamakailan contribution to the Disney family in the 2019 Lion King, I figured it was a good time as any to do an updated listahan with the twelve current official princesses. I decided to add Esmeralda, Megara, Anna, and Elsa too! We just take a look through the reyna Bee's singles and see which one fits each princess based on the title, lyrics, music video and general feel of the song.

Do you know what's funny? Even though she's all about female empowerment and women being independent, Beyonce's just like virtually every...

Hello all! Many apologies for running a bit behind on this one. The holidays are always chaos incarnate.

Cinderella was our Princess of the buwan for December, and here is a collection of thoughts on why we adore her. Many thanks to those who naisumite comments!

I absolutely pag-ibig when Cindy's snarky side peeks through, like when she makes a quip about the "music lesson". It's adorable but also rounds out her character. <3 ~MaidofOrleans

She teaches me to DREAM BIG!!! ~deedragongirl

She is kind, hard-working, and a princess from my childhood that I still pag-ibig today. ~LMH5113

I used to give into the hype and I still like her but I've recently realized that she's not that strong or effective of a villain. I've never seen the Angelina Jolie live action movie and quite honestly I don't think I ever will. This is all based on the original Sleeping Beauty.

Now, Maleficent definitely has the classic villain personality (sinister, petty, arrogant) and aesthetic. (she can turn into a dragon, and green apoy is cool) She's one of the most quotable and meme-able villains in all of Disney. In fact, I think she's the one who really perfected the look and feel of a "Disney Villain"...

I'm actually looking pasulong to watching this a little madami than I did when I had to watch Maleficent. This remake may not live up to the standards of the original but personally it's always been enjoyable to watch.

How much did I like this movie as a kid?
The first time I watched Sinderella I did like it and there were some changes I liked but then there were some changes I really had to question. Even with the problems I have with this movie I still like to watch it every now and then.

How much of this movie have I forgotten:

This is another sequel I haven't seen in forever. Longer than forever, actually. I would say I'm excited to watch this but after Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World I'm not looking pasulong to watching this one.

How much did I like this movie as a kid?
The beginning of this story is exactly the same as the one about Pocahontas 2; I wasn't into the original that much when I was a kid, but then this cartoon Disney movie with familiar faces came out, begged my dad to get me a copy, fin. But unlike Pocahontas 2 I actually did...

Here's the artikulo for Pocahontas!

I know in the past I've made comments about how I don't like this movie because it's been sinabi that the tale of Pocahontas saving John was a lie and I've also sinabi I can't stand Pocahontas and John together because it's gross Pocahontas was aged up for this movie. However I will watch this movie and just enjoy it without thinking about those things.

By now you should all know what I write about in these artikulo so I'll just go ahead and start!

Tonight's rewatch: Pocahontas

Gusot is my paborito Disney movie for many reasons besides the wonderful storyline and beautiful imagery. I really relate to Rapunzel in so many ways. I try to be optimistic and see the beauty in the small things in life. I try to stay hopeful and occupy my time with many hobbies. I have so many interests and pag-ibig learning about them and learning about the world and other cultures. We also share physical features, brown hair and green eyes, and prefer walking outside barefoot. I also have some German heritage, so I relate to her that way as well.

My mother also acts a lot like Mother Gothel....

While it hasn't been confirmed, various clues have pointed to Moana eventually joining the Disney Princess lineup. This process only involved 20+ users, which I think is a good thing, we'll save the BIG survey for after Moana's official coronation. That's why I didn't ask for comments or use fancy pics. Since the pool of users is so small, I wouldn't say these results are absolute and concrete. This is just a small prebiyu of where Moana as well as the other princesses stand.

Everyone has their personal ranking of their paborito Disney Princessess n thoughts of who should b included. In my eyes, this is the ranking of the maidens from the house of mouse:

15. Aurora, indeed the sleeping beauty is beautiful, elegant, n has a heavenly opera voice, unfortunately she has little agency in her own story n personality.

14. Anna, a spunky n cute go getter but most of the other princesses that have come before her have these traits checked off too.

13. Moana, a real cookie cutter of a modern disney princess, she is pretty much just an ethnic variation of Anna but is ahead one...

Now with all the issues, people have with Disney, one of the films that have legitimate grievances is Pocahontas. And as you can imagine, because there ARE legit grievances to be had with Pocahontas, sites like Tumblr have an absolute field araw with it. Personally, the madami research I did on the situation around this film, the madami I was actually fascinated sa pamamagitan ng it.

I know it's easy to write this movie off but how it came to be is a lot madami nuanced than you think. It actually was gonna be a story closer to what happened in history but then Jefferey Katzenberg's overwhelming desire to get another...

Though not nearly as much as Merida and other revival princesses,Tiana is occasionally bashed for contributing to Disney's current trend of "meta", "woke" commentary with her whole "hard work, you can't just wish" shtick. While this does irritate me, I try to separate film makers' intentions from the actual context of the movie and the character.

In the first act of the film, she's portrayed as diligent and determined but she's not as in your face about it. For the most part, her thing is "partying and dancing just isn't my for me". She's not insistent, condescending or critical of others for...
