Anna & Tiana fall under the category of having really irritating personalities at times, and I get very vocal about my issues with them (especially Tiana), but I'd still prefer them over characters like Elsa, Rapunzel, or Aurora who I have no aggravations with but feel like they are archetypes or seriously lack character depth. I feel like that's more unforgivable.
I will give more leeway to Rapunzel, who I feel has SOME touches of personality and at least heart in her and was meant to be more of an archetype to market, and Aurora, who isn't really meant to be a fleshed out character-- but I don't cut slack for Elsa, who's the main catalyst of the film and shows little to sign of personality outside of anxiety/depression. There's no excuse for that- she should have been made better, point blank, within the context of her film.
On the other hand, Anna has personality but the whole jumping from man to man and this demand for romance thing can be very irking but I still like her. Tiana is absolutely fantastic basically until she turns into a frog, then it seems most of her personality centers around her restaurant. She becomes flat. Yes she really wants her restaurant-- but what else. What else interests her? Why exactly does she want to run the restaurant so bad? I feel like that aspect should have been more fleshed out- I would have loved to see more of Tiana's love of food. Some scene where she's describing food and what flavors work better and what don't and her passion for it. But then I spend the second half of the film not liking her much. Because I think she can be very mean. So even though I complain about Tiana more, I'd still take her over the latter 3.
But it does cross lines. I can like Rapunzel more than Tiana at times because Tiana sometimes gets TOO aggravating.
I like Tiana and Merida, and I think they are complex character (despite Merida initially starting the movie as the uber cliched rebellious princesses). Anna and Ariel are irritating and Elsa is boring, she would be annoying if the movie gave her more focus though.
I like the other girls too, but I found Merida very irritating and Elsa a bit much.
Most of princesses that I don't like have more depth and complexity personalities, like Tiana and Ariel.
