When Anna tries to bring her back she kicks her out. Merida's actions are selfish and extremely short-sighted but she eventually realizes her mistake and bonds with her mother. For her it was a sacrifice. She's one of the most selfless. I know it might sound weird that she didn't know and I didn't know that but she didn't. The directors didn't want her to new. She didn't leave Arendelle to starve to death. As stupid as it might sound to you in the movie she didn't know. So how can she be selfish and leave them starve to death if she didn't know? Disney didn't deny it. They just wanted Elsa to not know so she could have a reason to run away. Blame the directors not Elsa. Anna sacrificed her life for Elsa and the first thing on her mind was to find her, even when she froze her heart, she still said "No, I'm not leaving without you" And Rapunzel gave up all her freedom to save Flynn's life, and if that isn't selfless than what is??)
