He saved Ariel from drowning when she became human, was during "Kiss the Girl", helped Ariel reach the wedding boat and saved Eric from Flotsam and Jetsam. He could have easily been replaced with any other character and the purpose would be fulfilled. His point of view doesn't add any depth to the story. Just my opinion.
