Everything We Know About Australia, We Learned from The Rescuers Down Under

The Disney Renaissance gave all of us Disney fans some of our greatest childhood memories. From The Little Mermaid to Tarzan, we were introduced to stories and places we thought could only exist in our dreams. In 1990,

Rescuers Down Under was released and it  took us to a far away land of magic and wonder … Australia. Long before Finding Nemo took us from the E.A.C to Sydney, we learned everything we know about the land down under from the Rescue Aid Society’s top agents.

When you initially think of Australia, you may think of the outback and vast areas of desert and red-tinted rocks. However,

Rescuers Down Under really showcases the diversity of the country. Outback turns to forest, which turns to the bustling cities of Melbourne and Sydney. It’s like Arizona, Oregon, and New York all rolled into one.

Australia is filled with all sorts of wildlife that we in the United States usually don’t see—unless we’re at a zoo. This movie alone features a kangaroo, platypus, wombat, goanna lizard, crocodile, koala, razorback, and a multitude of different birds. **NOTE: A Golden Eagle, while very rare, is not native to Australia, nor is it large enough to have a human child ride on its back. Do not try this at home.**

Towards the beginning of the movie, a distress call goes out to the Rescue Aid Society. We then travel by map from the outback all the way to New York City as the call is relayed. What did we learn from this sequence? Australia really isn’t that far from Hawaii … and Hawaii isn’t that far from the mainland.  So, by the transitive property (Is that right? We were never good at math.) Australia isn’t that far from the U.S.!

Poaching is bad. It’s against the law. It destroys ecosystems and put animals on the endangered list. In Australia, if you see a poacher, take Cody’s suggestion and call the Australian Rangers.

Who knew? We didn’t! Even today, while re-watching the movie, this writer thought to himself, “Hey, I never noticed that.” 26 years later, we’re learning something new from

When was the first time you heard someone say “G’day mate?” How about “Throw another shrimp on the ‘barbie!” There are a ton of great Australian phrases and slang that we hear almost every day. And if you’re like us, then the first place you ever heard them all was this movie.

The landscape is breathtaking. The animals are amazing. The people are kind (except poachers). But don’t get too comfortable when exploring the outback. There are many dangers out there, from waterfalls to crocs. So be careful.
