Sorry for the delay, we've all been very busy. But anyway, it's time for a another interview with our reigning champion, KataraLover. Not only has he won half the rounds in the contest, but he also won this exact round in the nakaraan one that was held. So, with further delay on with the interview.
This is your fourth win. How does it feel to have not just won four times but to have half the rounds of this contest?
Honestly, I’m surprised that I’ve been dominating this contest, especially since I only managed to finish it at the last minute. I am honored, of course! So thank you to everyone that voted for me and I wouldn’t be this far without all of you!
You won this same round in the last sequel contest, with your entry From Paws To Thumbs, how does it feel to have won it again?
I guess I can say that I know what good character development is lol. It’s really an honor to have won this twice in a row. I pag-ibig the main protagonists in both stories (Scamp, Angel, and Patch in From Paws To Thumbs and Anastasia in A Twist In Time) and I wanted them to develop in a realistic way. It’s like what Emma Watson sinabi about her experience playing Belle in the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, meaning that when you pag-ibig something so much that has been a big part of you, you really want to do it justice. While my character development isn’t anywhere near the amazing performance Emma did as Belle, I feel like it’s the same sentiment.
You written some tagahanga fiction, so you know how hard it is to develop characters and keep them in character at the same time. How does it feel to know that people think you're the best at developing your characters?
I like how you did say that I have done SOME fanfiction, since I’m not one of the madami active fanfiction writers on the internet lol. Anyway, it really does feel absolutely amazing! This taon in school, particularly this kamakailan semester, I’ve been really busy and my creativity in Pagsulat and story telling has felt like it’s been fading away to me. I’ve been afraid that I was losing my talent in one of the few things I know I’m good at and I just don’t know what I’d do if that happened. But knowing that character development, among other things I’ve won in this contest, is something people think I’m good at really helps with my confidence. I’ve been really stressed and busy this semester, which is why this interview is so late lol, and something like this is something I really needed to know I still got it. It really feels wonderful, especially since I wanted Anastasia’s development to be realistic and convincing, which is hard to do with villain reforming arcs in just what is meant to be an oras and a half long. So it’s a truly an amazing feeling.
When Pagsulat your tagahanga fictions have you ever been tempted to let your feelings about a character show, rather than them developing naturally?
Well, in some cases I have. Ignoring the crappy ones I’ve written and only focusing on the ones I consider good, I did almost want to demonize some characters but then I decided not to because I wasn’t just doing it for me but for Disney fans. I wanted to do justice even to the characters I didn’t care much for because I wanted it to be something everyone would enjoy. I know what it’s like to have a character I pag-ibig crapped on and I didn’t want to do that to others. An example would be my first draft of From Paws To Thumbs, which wasn’t NEARLY as good as my segundo drafts and not even the characters I pag-ibig were as developed as they turned out in my segundo draft, so you can only imagine how the ones I didn’t care as much for turned out.
Who would you say was the hardest character to develop? And why?
Most definitely Anastasia Tremaine. I mean, she’s not only the protagonist but is also a villainess that needs to be reformed in the end. I did have the original Twist In Time movie to help out but I wanted to flesh it out madami and I added madami things to the story. I have to make her development and choices she makes seem well thought-out and didn’t make her appear unlikable. Like when I needed her to decide to be with Henry/Charming instead of William/The Baker. I needed her to still be in pag-ibig with Will and not make her seem unlikable, so I had Lady Tremaine be the one who caused it. Plus having her be conflicted with loving William or Being with the Prince while also developing madami of her relationship with Sinderella made it hard to figure out because I wanted it all to flow well together and not feel all over the place and clunky. I did have inspiration from the ipakita Once Upon A Time and even it’s spin-off Once Upon A Time In Wonderland (Where Anastasia actually is a main character) with Anastasia’s character and the characters of Regina/The Evil reyna and Zelena/The Wicked Witch of the West. Her development is the hardest one I’ve had to do as of now and I enjoyed it IMMENSELY, despite the difficulty.
Who would you say was the easiest character to develop? And why?
Probably either Cinderella, Henry/Charming, or Lady Tremaine were the easiest for me to write. With Cinderella, I didn’t have to add that much to her original self in A Twist In Time but I still added some, like to her relationship with Anastasia. With Henry I didn’t have to add much. With Lady Tremaine, I did add to her and she actually helped make it easier for me to develop Anastasia in some parts. She reminds me of Cora/The reyna of Hearts from Once Upon A Time, and how she justifies the horrible things she did, like killing her daughter’s (Regina) true pag-ibig when she was young so she would marry Snow White’s father and become queen, sa pamamagitan ng saying that she was doing it to help her daughter. She even justified killing her first husband and the only man she ever loved in order to help her daughters ilipat up in life, as well as killing Cinderella’s parents. So she was pretty easy to write when developing her character with her motivation and the lengths she was willing to go to achieve her goals. I guess all of the characters were easy to develop compared to Anastasia.
Which of the character was the most fun to write about and develop? And why?
Obviously, it was Anastasia that was the most fun. I know she was difficult but it made me feel happy when I would write about her. She’s one of my paborito fictional characters of all time, so being able to write about her and develop her made it enjoyable, despite the difficulty. I also loved adding to her having the opportunity to be conventionally beautiful but not feeling like herself, so she has to learn to pag-ibig herself for who she truly is. Her unconventionally beautiful self is a part of her and helps make her who she is instead of someone else.
Which of the characters was the most boring/least fun to write about and develop? And why?
I’d have to say Drizella Tremaine was the most boring to write. She really is just supposed to be a one-dimensional character that is a bully to Anastasia. The only thing that was fun with her was having to do a picture of her as a conventional beauty but that was it. I didn’t add much to her because nothing was required of her. Plus I never cared for her at all!
Would you say it's harder to develop a pre-existing character or an original character?
Both can be equally as hard for me. I’m sometimes afraid of people thinking I didn’t give a new character much of a personality, even if I think they do have one. However, I want to make sure a pre-existing character is done justice and not feel like it was rushed or out of nowhere. I mean, trying to develop a personality for William/The Baker was hard (I know he is a pre-existing character but he doesn’t have much of a personality where he appears) but developing Anastasia was definitely hard! So this may be cheating but I’d say both are equally as hard.
What do you think is the hardest thing about Pagsulat pre-existing characters in tagahanga fiction and why?
Trying to keep them true to their characters but also trying to expand upon them. That is what the real purpose of a sequel should be and not just to be a quick cash grab. I wanted to add madami depth to things that were great and make them better like Anastasia and Cinderella’s relationship, Anastasia and The Baker’s romance, Lady Tremaine’s ruthlessness, and Anastasia’s development, just to name a few. You want to tell the story you want to tell but you also need to do justice to these characters that are beloved sa pamamagitan ng so many people. When you think about it, a Sinderella sequel about time travel is a pretty silly idea but Disney did a great job with it and I wanted to prove that I could make it even better. Even with characters like Lady Tremaine that I’m not crazy about, I wanted to ipakita just how ruthless she could be and terrify people, which I apparently succeeded at since one person told me she was on the level of scary of the Scream movies.
What do you think the easiest thing about Pagsulat pre-existing characters in tagahanga fiction and why?
I guess it’s that they already have well-established personalities and when you’re Pagsulat about a character you love, including their flaws, it makes it easier to write them.
How hard would you say it is to develop a pre-existing character, but the same time keep the character’s original personality?
Well, I’ve pretty much covered that but I’ll try to explain in a different way. One thing I didn’t mention was how you don’t want them to learn a lesson they already have learned because that would be repetitive. That’s one of the many reasons I feel like Once Upon A Time should’ve ended at season 6 and not have been renewed for a season 7. Season 6 had a perfect ended and all of the main characters felt like their stories were complete but I won’t go into detail about that. There is only so much you can do with a character with the same lesson before it gets beat to death. That’s one of the things I struggled with in From Paws To Thumbs with the lessons the characters had to learn. You should keep them true to their characters and have them learn but also not make them be so changed to where they’re unrecognizable in the end.
A big part of developing the characters is also developing their relationships with the other characters in a believable way. Was this hard or easy to do and why?
It was kind of a little bit of both in my opinion. With Anastasia and Will, they already had a strong chemistry, so that was easy, but I also wanted to expand and flesh their relationship out since they didn’t have much screentime together. I needed it to be in a believable way without making their pag-ibig for each other take away from other parts of the movie. I also wanted to ipakita a scene where Anastasia sees Sinderella at the kastilyo and was trying to get her to leave so she wouldn’t get hurt. She has lived a taon as a servant like Sinderella and therefore understood some of the pain she put her through. I also wanted to have her say she was sorry to Cinderella, not just for the events of A Twist In Time but for everything she had ever done to her. I still had to have Sinderella and Henry/Charming still have the same amount of scenes they had in the original sequel to make their pag-ibig believable, as well as Anastasia and Henry’s friendliness and both of their relationships with the King. It was hard to balance out to keep it from being too cluttered. The main important relationships are Anastasia’s relationship with William and Cinderella, since they help her grow the most (The King did a little too and her mother’s negative actions helped but not as much as Will and Cindy). I would’ve liked to have made William and Henry childhood mga kaibigan but that would’ve been too much to add and taken away from the story.
Which relationship was the most fun to develop and why?
While it’s a hard choice between Sinderella and Anastasia or Anastasia and William, I guess I’d have to pick Anastasia and Cinderella. It’s such a unique sister friendship to write about because it’s clear that they weren’t very close sisters or the best of mga kaibigan in the past. It’s interesting having a relationship between a bully and the victim that are stepsisters and become friends. They’re also very similar to one another and I’m just going to copy and paste a section from my artikulo about my character analysis of Anastasia where I brought this up.
“It's in this movie was we start to see some similarities between Sinderella and Anastasia. They both have dreams of happiness but are kept from it because of Lady Tremaine's prejudice (against Cinderella, which keeps her from Charming, and against the Baker, which keeps Anastasia away from her happiness), both have an abusive sister, their dresses are ruined and they run off crying, Anastasia receives help in gaining confidence and obtaining a madami attractive appearance from Sinderella (much like she did from her Fairy Godmother), both think they will have their happily ever after but their dreams are shattered and cry (Cinderella when she's locked in her room and Anastasia when she thinks the Baker is giving bulaklak to a pretty young girl but is actually just a friend), and thanks to pag-ibig and courage their dreams come true in the end. But they also grow a strong bond with each other because of Cinderella's kindness. Sinderella is a very big person to forgive Anastasia like that and even try to help her. I think she sees some of herself in Anastasia and is grateful for the help she received, so she wants to help others, even Anastasia.”
Despite Anastasia having her sister and mother alive, she has basically been alone and didn’t have pag-ibig in her life. Sinderella at least had her mga kaibigan and the memories of two loving parents. Anastasia had goodness in her and had a whole taon as a servant to get a taste of what Sinderella went through. Sinderella has always been kindhearted and could see Anastasia wasn’t happy. The two of them finally ended up having a family that would pag-ibig them no matter what and it was with each other as sisters. Anastasia apologizes to Sinderella but tells her she doesn’t deserve forgiveness but just wanted her to know how sorry she was. Cinderella, being the good person she was, forgave her anyway and could give Anastasia the family pag-ibig she had been deprived of thanks to this angel. It’s an interesting and unique relationship that shows people can change and how Disney can go outside the box.
Which relationship was the most boring/least fun to develop and why?
It would absolutely be Anastasia and Drizella. I don’t like Pagsulat about Drizella in general and I hated having to write her being mean to Anastasia. It wasn’t even in a psychologically interesting way like with Anastasia’s relationship with her mother but instead just Drizella being a bully.
You helped the development of characters like Anastasia, Lady Tremaine, and even Drizella sa pamamagitan ng giving them a backstory, where Lady Tremaine kills their father and justifies her actions. How did you come up with the idea for that backstory?
Well, as I’ve said, I’m a HUGE tagahanga of the ipakita Once Upon A Time and I got inspiration from Cora’s backstory. She was the Miller’s daughter from the story of Rumpelstiltskin and she ended up choosing power of love, which gave me inspiration for that idea for Lady Tremaine. I even made a short fanfiction about this backstory that is two chapters that I will give iugnay to at the end of this question. I just thought what was Lady Tremaine like before she was the Wicked Stepmother that we know her as today. What was she like as a child? What made her the way she is? Was she ever in love? Why was power so important to her? I didn’t want her to be too sympathetic in that story, even though she still is, but I also wanted it to look like also caused her own unhappiness and undoing. Should my remake of A Twist In Time be made into a Disney movie, I would include this story backstory as a feature on the Blu-Ray/DVD like how bravo did with Mor’du’s backstory in madami depth (Which was MUCH madami interesting than the entire movie of bravo lol).

You’re a judge for the contest, so if you were allowed to vote for yourself, would you? (be honest)
To be honest, I kind of would and I know my winning streak will probably end because of me saying that but I just pag-ibig the development I put into the characters. However, there are others that did a great job as well.
Last question, do you think you deserved to win this round? (be honest)
Yes, but there were also others that deserved to win tis round as well, particularly with Scrooge’s development in True Treasure that did have a tear go down my face.
