I wrote a letter to ABC, but they only allow 500 characters, so I'm posting the full version here.
Dear ABC,
I am deeply upset to hear that Brooke Smith, and her character Dr. Erica Hahn will not be returning to Grey’s Anatomy after this Thursday’s episode. When Dr. Erica Hahn leaves Grey’s Anatomy, I will not only morn the loss of a beloved character. I will morn the loss of a character that I can relate to. I am not a doctor, a lawyer, or a CSI. I will never petsa a McDreamy, or a McSteamy. I’m just a 20 year-old lesbian from Missouri. While TV is a heightened reality, it is most poignant when it touches on our own hopes, dreams, and struggles. When Dr. Hahn talked about seeing leaves for the first time as a comparison to discovering she was gay, the scene was so evocative of my own discovery that it brought tears to my eyes.
There are so few lesbian and bisexual characters on TV, that the loss of even just one is greatly disheartening. When I was growing up, I relied on TV for madami than just a pinagmulan of daydreams and dress up. I found heroines, whose morals and strength I admired and modeled. I want the susunod generation of young lesbian and bisexual girls to be able to have strong, intelligent, passionate heroines, who also reflect their struggles to come out or deal with homophobia.
Perhaps you disagree with me. Maybe my sexuality conflicts with your morality, or your desired market. Just keep in mind that I’m also a devoted TV viewer. I adore my shows, and will do anything for them. I talk with my mga kaibigan about my paborito shows (I’ve even managed to hook my parents on a few), blog about them, and buy almost any magazine that features them. Every birthday and Christmas, I ask for the DVD sets. I have t-shirts, key rings and even scrubs that ipakita the world my paborito shows. When I heard a few of my shows were struggling with ratings, I watched them over and over online after watching them live, hoping to help the ratings and ad revenue.
Dr. Hahn and her relationship with Callie was one of the few reasons I was continuing to watch Grey’s Anatomy. If there isn’t a place for lesbian and bisexual characters on Grey’s Anatomy anymore, then I’m not sure there’s a place in my TV schedule for Grey's Anatomy.
