Game of Thrones Blu-ray extra video: Creating the mammoths and giants 

is known for the hellacious battles it wages in the penultimate episode of every season. The one in this past season, however, was really special because of the use of FREAKING AWESOME WOOLLY MAMMOTHS.

This exclusive clip from the upcoming collection 

(out Feb. 17 on Blu-ray and DVD) shows how exactly they brought 25-foot-tall mammoths and had them live alongside men as well as giants. Guest director Neil Marshall called that ninth episode of last year “easily the most complicated thing I’ve ever shot.”

Because they didn’t have a 700-foot ice wall as a set for the epic skirmish between the Night’s Watch and a crew of Wildlings and their ginormous woolly pals, Marshall and the filmmakers used green screen to film the human element and then added the giants in later — the actors playing them stood nearly 8 foot tall but that’s just half the size of an on-screen giant. So after putting them into the frames, computer-generated mammoths were added last as the third part of the puzzle.

It makes you wonder what HBO has in store next — the fantasy hit returns for a fifth season April 12.
