The case for 'Killjoys': Why you'll love it and what it means for Syfy
Countdown to 'Star Wars Rebels': On Kanan (and who's in charge here)
Are you watching 'The 100'? If not, let me convince you to remedy that
enjoys taking the tropes you see in sci-fi and flipping them upside down. In the first four minutes, we meet John Jacobis (Aaron Ashmore), a cocky space pirate who seems to have gotten himself caught. He’s stalling for time until Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) can rescue him, but Dutch gets caught. Oh no, what will our dashing space pirate do now? Especially when the bad guys look ready to take advantage of the beautiful Dutch.
Suddenly, helpless Dutch has fired a blaster (from between her legs), the bad guys are down, and John is free. The head bad guy who was so cocky a minute ago? As Dutch informs him, he’s been Locked and Served by the the RAC (Reclamation Apprehension Coalition) because he’s got a warrant out. When it comes to Killjoys, ‘The warrant is all.’
Dutch and John also have a very cool ship named Lucy. Lucy is not just a ship, she’s an AI with a very distinct personality (and voiced by Tamsen McDonough). I love Lucy. She’s awesome.
Once they turn the prisoner in, Dutch and John plan to spend their payday on some new toys down in the Bazaar, but a new warrant comes in and John begs off, leaving Dutch a little confused.
Now, normally I don’t reveal things out of order, but in this case, I’m making an exception. The new warrant is a Level Five (Kill) warrant. John (a Level 3 Killjoy) just accepted the warrant on behalf of the team without telling Dutch, who is a Level 5 Killjoy. Problem is, Dutch doesn’t usually accept Kill warrants (you’ll learn why later). But once a warrant is accepted, it has to be carried out. Basically, John is about to illegally tackle a warrant and screw Dutch over in the process. Considering how close he and Dutch seem to be, that’s really out of his character.
Why did he accept the warrant? It’s for his brother, D’avin Jacobis (Luke Macfarlane). D’avin may be going under a different name, but he and John accepted the warrant so that another Killjoy wouldn’t. Sure, it’s been eight years since John saw his brother, but how did he end up with a Kill warrant?
Hello, Fight Club! D’avin has ended up on a slaver ship fighting in cage matches for show. John talks the organizer into putting him in the ring with D’avin. The brothers clearly have some issues to work out, which they do during a great brother-to-brother chat/fight. Dutch manages to get there before they kill each other, and trank-darts D’avin to get the three of them out of there without anyone the wiser.
Well, save for a guy who was watching and figures out that it was a trank dart and not a Kill shot. Who’s he? You’ll find out later.
D’avin (and we) get a quick rundown on The Quad. Run by The Company, The Quad consists of a planet, Qresh, and its three moons; Westerley, Leith, and Arkyn. Killjoys work independently from the Company. D’avin thinks he can just get dropped off somewhere, but the Kill warrant is serious business. Thus, Dutch goes to her handler, Bellus (Nora McLellan), to see if they can do anything to fix it. Bellus tells Dutch the warrant was written by The Company. It’s a start.
Dutch’s plan is this: 1) The Company has been cracking down recently, and Dutch figures they’re looking for someone. 2) She and Johnny find them and trade to get D’avin’s warrant canceled. She talks to Alvis (Morgan Kelly), the leader of the Scarback monks and a Resistance fighter. Alvis tells them The Company wants Rolly Desh (Jason Jazrawy), who’s stolen valuable information from them.
Back on Lucy, D’avin is having nightmares. He’s ex-military, but this seems to be more than Battle Brain (as he calls it). It also means he can help on the mission. He may not think he’s worth saving, but he’s not going to let his brother go down for this.
The mission is easy. Rolly is supposed to be on Qresh to help in a Garden Blessing. Uh, a what now? Qresh land is rare, which is why many populated the moons, but those who own land get stakes in The Company and, as such, are very, very rich. Dutch and John are dressed to blend in. In fact, Dutch looks very at home.
However, time is running out, and Killjoy Fancy Lee (Sean Baek) just showed up to take the warrant by shooting a poison dart at Dutch. D’avin saved her from a direct hit, but she’s been grazed. Yep, if a Killjoy fails on a Kill warrant, they become the target. Plus, the guy who was following her on the slave ship is here—and it seems he and Dutch have history. As the poison takes effect, we hear him call her by a different name, then flash back to him handing a red box to a younger girl. The box contains an ornate blade; he tells her that anytime she is presented with a red box, she has a duty to perform. In this case, that duty looks a lot like killing a man.
The good news is that D’avin and Johnny got Rolly and retrieved the information that The Company wants. The bad news is, they’re pinned down by the house guards. The better news is that Dutch is back in the fight … and those black pearls she’s wearing (and Dutch herself) do a lot more than look pretty.
So, yay, the warrant on D’avin is canceled. However, the RAC (Reclamation Apprehension Coalition) is seriously pissed at Dutch; they would have punished her if someone higher up hadn’t demanded she be cleared. Who? No idea.
Actually, as a conversation between Johnny and D’avin shows, there’s a lot we don’t know about Dutch. There’s a lot she doesn’t say and a lot Johnny doesn’t ask. And there’s a lot I’m sure we’re about to find out as
Geek Girl Diva is a walking IMDb and a lover of television shows like Supernatural, Sherlock and Doctor Who. She’s watched a live autopsy and The Blacklist, although not at the same time ... we think. It’s a toss-up on who she wants to be more: Thomas Harris or Daenerys Targaryen—although Daenerys has dragons. We’ll go with the mother of fire-breathers.
