How does Bartolomeo have a connection with Luffy ?

I've been wondering for a while now, how Bartolomeo could be connected to Luffy.
I don't know if I'm just pagbaba with my eyes closed and missing an obvious point or if there's actually something 'profound' that iugnay the two...

What do you guys think ?

Pretty sure it's either outside the canon, or Bartolomeo was a minor character in some group a while ago. Some have suggested that he may be a stand in representative for Sabo, but I can't say I buy it.
