I don't think she really wanted him to have a girlfriend because it would change their friendship but I don't think she wanted him for herself either.

They have always been best friends... but there were no romantic feelings involved.

It's weird cause on the Soapnet website they are advertising for the "One Tree Hill New Years Marathon" and they state "Remember when Peyton was dating Nathan? Haley had a crush on Lucas? And Lucas wasn't even playing high school basketball? Go back in time with your favorite Ravens, Saturday January 1st on SOAPnet!" But uhhh Haley never had a crush on Lucas. They either made a typo or they should watch their marathon because they clearly don't know the show very well.

This is what makes OTH different from most other teen dramas.....not every character has to sleep together.A boy and girl can have a friendship and don't have to be linked romantically.Lucas and Haley's beautiful friendship in s1 could have went 2 ways.It wouldn't have been hard for writers to play on the first couple of episodes building the Laley friendship dynamic and closeness between them and then making it into a story arc about one of them having a longtime secret crush on the other but Laley had such an unbreakable sweet friendship that it was hard to break that bond and put them in a romantic relationship. I am glad that OTH kept them friends but I would have loved them either way,life long friends or romantic soulmates.
