‘Outlander’ Review: Season 2 Proves It’s The…

A show can either sink or swim in its second season, and ‘Outlander’ is soaring to new heights. The show looks and feels completely different from its stellar first season, but it’s still the best show on television. And I’m going to tell you all the reasons why.
, that isn’t fantastic. From the storylines to the costumes to Jamie and Claire’s evolving relationship,
second season is dazzling. This fantasy drama is the polar opposite of
, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. If you’re not already watching
I’m an avid TV lover, so I’ll pretty much watch anything on TV. But it takes a lot for me to be obsessed with a show. Well, I’m obsessed with
. I have been since season one, but after watching the press screeners released for season two, I’m a full-blown fanatic.
The heart of my obsession? Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe). In my eyes, their relationship is the best one on TV. Other shows should take notes. Despite the impossible circumstances that brought them together, their relationship is undeniably real. The show’s second season picks up pretty much where the first season left off, and Jamie is still coming to terms with his rape.
Jamie and Claire’s relationship isn’t all sunshine and rainbows in the first few episodes. Their marriage is strained and scarred by their traumatic experiences with Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies). They may have a joint mission of preventing the Battle of Culloden and the Jacobite rebellion, but they stake their independence as power players in France.

In the premiere, the show does flash forward to 1947. Claire somehow finds her way back to a shocked Frank, and she’s pregnant with Jamie’s child. Although Jamie and Claire are fraught with tension in 1740s France, you can feel the pain Claire is going through as she finds herself separated from Jamie. The idea of living in a world without him (and with a man that looks exactly like Black Jack Randall) seems nearly impossible, but Claire’s strength prevails. Someone just give Caitriona the Emmy now.

But let’s talk about those costumes. Not that the costumes in season one weren’t gorgeous, but the show stepped up its game big time in season two. The detailing and patterns of the outfits are simply stunning. Caitriona looks exquisite in every single costume she puts on. Sam also wears his clothes
well, as Jamie’s forced to adapt to the fashion of French high society.
takes on a completely different feel in season two. Jamie and Claire left the lush forests and greenery of Scotland behind in favor of the glitz and glamour of Paris. Such a drastic change in mood could have struck the show a fatal blow, but
After almost getting complete snubbed during awards season last year, the show is back with a vengeance.
second season is a tour de force of drama and deception, but the crux of it all is still a love story. It is undoubtedly the most addictive show on TV, and that is saying a lot.
