Why are clothes from Aeropostal/Abercrombie/Hollister exc., so popular?

I mean the shirts that just say the brand name or whatever, EVERYWHERE I look some person is wearing them! And it confuses the fuck outta me! Yes I realize they're famous brands, but what MADE them famous?! It's like the only clothes they have, just shirts with their brand names! Why the hell is that so appealing?! Is it woven from the pubic hairs of a unicorn or something? I don't get it at all!
