Is it illegal to kill a burglar?

Ok I'm really terrified right now. Summer brings two aspects with it that I hate; 1. Allergies. 2. Burglars.
Normally the burglars just steal stuff, but two days nakaraan a girl was raped sa pamamagitan ng a burglar in her own bedroom just a few blocks away from my home!

If I keep a kutsilyo in my nightstand and kill the burglar if he's in my room, would that be illegal or self-defense?
