A - Excellent
B - Very good
C - Good/Average
D - Below Average
E - Well below average
F - Rubbish.

Anything below a C is counted as a fail in the UK. But a C is good enough for me, it still counts as a pass.

If your going according to say GCSE scale, C is average. A D or E is still pass, just a bad pass, U is unclassified, which means you failed. I'm not sure about F. I'm a bit rusty cause I've never gone below a C but mums a teacher and she marks GCSE papers, so I have a rough idea from her. Anything below a C in the UK isn't a fail as foundation papers are grade C - E. So a C is still a pass. Generally a C is 50-60% depending on the paper, and how hard the paper is.
