Sailor Moon Crystal: "Act 10 - Moon" Review
This week’s Sailor Moon Crystal was a cornucopia of amazing events. Sailor Moon and her friends travelled to the moon to learn more about their mysterious past. We found out who the Four Heavenly Kings really are. We got to see a crazy (and surprisingly emotional) showdown between the Dark Kingdom and the Sailor Guardians. We witnessed Tuxedo Mask become a pawn of Queen Beryl. And we were treated to some absolutely stunning art direction. In short, this episode is as good as it gets.
Sailor Moon Crystal: English Subtitled Trailer
There’s a lot to tackle this week, but let’s start with the girls’ journey to the moon, which showcased Sailor Moon Crystal’s most beautiful artwork to date. There were fantastic shots of the moon at night, the earth at dawn, and the star-spangled space in between. Layered on top of these beautiful images was a poignant scene between Usagi and the spirit of real mother, Queen Serenity. I teared up as the queen relayed the sad fate of her daughter and Prince Endymion in their past lives, as well as the fall of the Moon and Earth Kingdoms. It’s a sad tale, which is why I loved the queen’s gentle reassurance that this time things would be different. This time Sailor Moon and her Guardians were going to seal away Queen Metalia for good.
Of course, in order to do so the Guardians must use the power of the Legendary Silver Crystal, which currently resides inside Mamoru. Who, by the way, is now being controlled by Queen Beryl! I absolutely loved this plot twist, because it raises the stakes for both Mamoru and Usagi. How is Sailor Moon going to retrieve the power of the Silver Crystal without harming a potentially hostile Tuxedo Mask? We’ll have to wait until next time to find out, but I don’t mind this kind of cliffhanger since it keeps me on the edge of my seat.
Speaking of being on the edge of my seat, this week\'s battle between the Four Heavenly Kings and the Sailor Guardians was intense. The four kings didn\'t mess around this time (Nephrite nearly ground stomped Sailor Jupiter), and the Guardians didn\'t hold back, either. In fact, they pulled off some seriously cool stunts this week! Like when Sailor Venus ran up a wall to avoid Kunzite\'s spell. Or when Sailor Moon rocketed out of orbit and busted out an extra large dose of Moon Healing Escalation.
As cool as this fight was though, it was also a bit tragic given that we now know the true identity of the Four Heavenly Kings. You could tell the revelation that they were once in love with the Sailor Guardians really rattled the girls; it was hard staying dry-eyed when Sailor Venus begged Kunzite to stop fighting and remember his former self. Unfortunately Queen Beryl (who brainwashed the Four Heavenly Kings for her own evil schemes) still controls their minds, so for now they continue to be enemies with the Sailor Guardians.
Act 10 wasn’t all about action and drama, though. Thanks to some excellent pacing, there was room for some nice quiet moments as well. I really enjoyed watching Usagi spend quality time with her family, as we rarely get to see Usagi interact with her parents. (Usagi’s dad flipping out over the news his daughter has a boyfriend was pretty cute.) And it was sweet watching the girls bond over arcade games while getting ready to go to the moon. I loved these little moments of downtime, since they made the more dramatic moments all the more potent.

Act 10 was easily the strongest episode of Sailor Moon: Crystal to date. It had it all: action, comedy, drama and suspense. It also had great pacing, crazy plot twists, excellent art direction, and a healthy dose of girl power. In short, it was everything you could want in a Sailor Moon episode.
