So I went to the faq about the book and each of the questions. There were only three. When I got to the last question, I couldn't believe it. Here is exactly what it said: In a special feature on the DVD The Outsiders: The Complete Novel, Rob Lowe reveals that S. E. Hinton told him that Soda dies as a result of the Vietnam War two weeks before his 19th birthday, in order to help Rob Lowe better understand his character. It's never stated or even hinted at how "his brother's took it".
