He can not losing his power he was born a werewolf it's in his genes, DNA he can't stop being a werewolf/lose his power as much as he can't change the color of his eyes and hair or skin. It's a stupid SL that's not logical at all like when the loonre eclips cane he lost his power for 15 mints is also stupied he wasn't not born human then turned werewolf like Scott,Liam,Erica,Boyde or Isaac he was born with the genes of werewolf.

And idk, I think it's a cool plotline. Derek has been a flop since season 1 so at least something interesting is finally happening to him.
