Thirteen-year-old middle schooler Shawna Redman of Safford, Arizona, was a pretty normal kid. She was great at volleyball, got straight A’s, and her biggest offense up to that point was being tardy a grand total of one time.

Who could’ve imagined that she was a drug dealer?

That day, the school’s vice-principal called Shawna into his office. Weird, that never happened to Shawna before. He had searched Shawna’s locker and now wanted her purse. Shawna wasn’t told what he was looking for and she was too scared to ask. After dumping her purse’s contents, rifling...

Alicia and Will take on an inquest at the morgue, Cary's father returns, and Eli schemes against Jordan one last time
By Breia Brissey at ew

I kind of like it when the case of the week takes a turn for the weird, and this week was just that: Will and Alicia set up tindahan in a morgue instead of a traditional court room for an inquest into the death of Roger Ludwig, an Illinois Supreme Court Justice. We heard the car crash in the episode's opener, but didn't see how it all went down. Ludwig's insurance company, led sa pamamagitan ng Wilk Hobson (Frederick Weller), was looking to pay...

Ethos (Greek) = character; Mores (Latin) = customs

vs.

Moralitas = manner, character, proper behavior

Professor Gentsch wrote this on the board at the start of his "Ethics, Economics and Law" Seminar during 1L at Harvard Law. What do those terms mean?

Ethics vs. Morality

But aren't they synonymous? Interchangeable? Break down the roots of each word. "Character" is in both. "Customs" and "manner" have similar meanings. But "proper behavior" is where the two diverge. What constitutes "proper behavior?"

Consider these two scenarios:

Dear Amber,

I'm an 11 year-old girl. My Dad is a dentist and left my Mom a taon nakaraan for the receptionist at work. He now spends all his time with his girlfriend. I'm supposed to spend every weekend with them, but I feel guilty about my Mom because she's crying all of the time. What should I do?

Vegas. Drive-thru wedding chapel. 5 PM. Regular Friday night. Maggie and Wes get hitched.

2 AM Saturday morning, their car’s found abandoned in the desert; dead body in the trunk. Maggie & Wes are asleep in a hotel on the strip. They claim their car was stolen the nakaraan evening. But...

A hotel clerk sinabi that Maggie checked into the hotel alone. A garahe video camera shows Wes driving their car out of the garahe at 9:30pm. Most telling, though, are hair and clothing fibers on the body that link back to Wes.

48 hours...2880 minutes... 172,800 seconds. If you are arrested, this is how long the authorities can hold you without charging you. If this happens, believe me, you... will... feel... every... second...

To avoid this from happening, first, don't commit a crime. But if you've ignored that sage payo or are wrongly accused of sinabi crime, here's what you can expect...

After 48 hours, you must be either released or charged. If you're charged, you can end up stuck in jail awaiting a bail hearing. If bail is denied or you can't pay, it can be years behind bars before you ever...

Beginning in the years leading up to World War I, the drama centers on the Crawley family and their servants. "The sun is rising behind Downton Abbey, a great and splendid house in a great and splendid park. So secure does it appear, that it seems as if the way of life it represents will last for another thousand years. It won't". In season 2, the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who work for them has been changed forever, since the Great War was declared at the end of the last series.

Lockhart/Gardner tries to halt a convict's execution, and Alicia and Cary continue their plans to start their own firm
By Breia Brissey @ EW

Welcome back! Season 5 is finally here, and nothing -- not even the inevitable CBS football delays -- will keep me from Alicia & Co. But before we dive into "Everything Is Ending," let's take care of a little bit of summer hiatus housekeeping: First of all, congratulations to Josh Charles, who married his longtime girlfriend, Sophie Flack, earlier this month. Congrats are also in order for Carrie Preston, who took home...

You’re a young associate at a prestigious law firm. You got to where you are today sa pamamagitan ng acing the LSATS, going to an Ivy League school, and working your asno off. You didn’t use connections; you didn’t need to. And now that you’ve got your foot in the door all you’ve got to do is work hard to ilipat up, right?

Wrong.
The cliché "It’s all about who you know" is spot on. Sure, you need to work hard - I adhere to the "first one in, last one out" rule – but social networks are just as or even madami crucial. And I’m not just talking Facebook and Linked-In. I’m talking...

When “The Good Wife” premièred, on CBS in 2009, it appeared to have a simple premise: it was a meditation on the political wife who stood sa pamamagitan ng her man. The main character, Alicia Florrick, was clearly inspired sa pamamagitan ng Silda Spitzer, but she had many sisters in that year’s cruel perp walk of betrayed wives, including Elizabeth Edwards, Elin Nordegren, Jenny Sanford, and Dina Matos McGreevey. (Soon, Anne Sinclair and Maria Shriver joined the parade.) Only the November before, the country had elected a President whose campaign was fuelled—and likely saved—by...

It’s been a disappointing week at work. I was ibingiay an order with which I deeply disagreed. I performed it, and I stood behind it as my choice, but the whole incident left a mapait taste in my mouth and has forced me to reassess people for whom I have, up until now, had great respect.

Jake Arvey, the Chicago Democratic machine boss of the 1950s, had a revealing quote: “There are definitions of politics: the art of compromise, the art of the possible. But to me, politics is the art of putting people under obligation to you.” I get it. Patronage is what makes...

Ah, the grand jury. A prosecutor’s best friend, especially in Chicago. Because the burden of proof is so low, grand juries overwhelmingly vote to indict, which make the rare cases when a grand jury returns a “no bill” an unusual occurrence. But a vote of no bill can come with its own consequences…

One of the most controversial events in Chicago history, the death of Black panter leader Fred Hampton, featured several grand juries, including a federal grand jury investigation.

Early in the morning on December 4, 1969, on the order of State’s Attorney Edward...

Diplomatic immunity is a centuries-old tradition in international law and a critical component of working diplomatic relations today. The guaranteed protection sa pamamagitan ng a host country from prosecution ensures the safety of representatives and diplomats engaged in difficult work.

On a practical level, however, it can really suck.

While most diplomats understand that they are expected to obey the laws and regulations of their host country, blanket immunity can be used sa pamamagitan ng bad eggs to cover a wealth of sins. Foreign diplomats residing in the U.S. are believed to...

Now this isn't my feeling, it's hearsay… if you want to beat a DUI when pulled over while intoxicated, slip the officer a $100 bill along with your license.

Why bring up DUI's and police corruption? The following story is in the Sun-Times, so it's okay to discuss… Jonas Stern, a partner at Stern, Lockhart & Gardner, has been charged with allegedly "Driving Under the Influence." Mr. Stern has a long history of crusading against police brutality, corruption and fighting in the name of constitutional freedoms. Is he being targeted sa pamamagitan ng the CPD? Yesterday, I met a woman whose innocent (in my personal opinion, not the opinion of Stern, Lockhart & Gardner) husband is on death row.

Will Gardner, one of the senior partners at SLG, argued an automatic appeal before the Illinois Appellate Court. We lost. Later, that man’s wife came into my office. She had a picture of her husband with their young daughter...“the last time he held his daughter.” It got to me. Reminded me of one of the reasons why I became a lawyer.

When I served a summer internship at the Innocence Project, I worked on the little-known DNA...
