So many emotions, so little time. In the funeral episode of ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ Caroline was forced to say goodbye to her mother — and to figure out where she stands with Stefan.
Elena (Nina Dobrev) stepped up in the BFF department on
to do anything and everything to support Caroline (Candice Accola) after her mom passes — but quickly realizes she wasn’t mourning in the healthiest way.
For Caroline, she tried to be herself: making a list of things to do, practicing what to say to people, and preparing for the funeral of her mother every way possible. The whole crew even slept at the Salvatore house to show support (side note: she’s dated all the men in that room). She was determined to get everything done in that day — no matter how much work it would take.
Of course, even though Elena won’t leave her side, she can’t completely focus on saying goodbye to her mother — she can’t stop thinking about her kiss with Stefan (Paul Wesley) and wondering where their relationship stands. Apparently, she thinks the best time to ask him about it is moments before the funeral, in the church, in front of her mother’s casket. Naturally, he avoided it and told her they could talk after. We know it’s because of two things Damon told him: “Caroline wants the real deal, but if you don’t, pull the ripcord before you make things worse,” and “She’s not the one. If she was, you wouldn’t have to ask.”
It’s time for the funeral — which means a lot of ugly crying on my part, and pretty crying on the town of Mystic Falls. The police send off was a powerful one, but not as heart wrenching as Damon’s eulogy. He spent the first half of the episode struggling to write it, and flashing back to his childhood when he was 16 (looking like a 30 year old), and a 10-year-old Stefan was angry at him for not attending their mother’s funeral. He shared that Liz tried to tell him a message for Caroline before she passed but he had stopped her because he told her she’d have the chance to tell her — but she didn’t. So he told Caroline how proud her mother was “and that she should be.”
“You’re a beautiful, strong woman, a generous friend, and a bright light in a sea of dark. She said you were extraordinary, and you are, and so was she,” he stated. With that, Caroline stood and sang, “Say Grace,” by Sam Baker.
During that song, we saw Stefan’s realization on his face — and he told Damon afterward that no, it wasn’t the love he felt for Elena or Katherine. “I realize that I may not be able to explain what I feel for her, but it is something. Maybe all love isn’t true love in the messed up way that we’ve experienced it, but I think this could turn into something even better.” Well, I’d say that’s perfectly put. So of course, he had to tell Caroline.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible. At the end of the funeral, everyone went to (you guessed it), the Mystic Grill. However, Caroline was in a hurry to leave — but Elena knew something was wrong so she followed her home. There, she figured it out: Caroline was going to turn off her emotions, and there was
nothing she could do about it. Literally, nothing, since Caroline snapped her neck before Stefan could get there. And when he did, he found Elena on the floor.
Not everything could be heartbreaking in the episode though! Jo and Kai both got extremely sick, and assumed it was because of the cheated merge. However, he was dying and if he died, so would she. So in order to save her, she passed over her magic to him. With that, she found out she wasn’t sick — she was pregnant. Luckily, Alaric was planning to propose so basically, they’re perfect and now getting married.
Also, Bonnie continued her journey back, heading to the Salvatore house in 1903. There, she found the one and only Momma Salvatore. Yes, we knew it was her because
at the end and totally jumped on Damon in the best “I missed you” way ever. There, she showed him the video she grabbed when she was being sucked out of the other side — revealing Lilly Salvatore.
Oh, and I can’t forget one more positive in this episode — Matt has decided to become a cop and hopes to enlist Tyler, too. So that means they’ll be in blue uniforms. Yes. Please. Although I’m not sure what happens wehn Tyler has to kill somone. Anyways.

'Vampire Diaries': Stefan & Caroline Flirt 'Notebook' Style -- Watch Clip
Almost 55 years of age (woman). Since it aired son and I watched together. Now he’s got a girlfriend (guess he needs a neck to suck on) so I fly solo Thursday nights and that’s okay because that’s how life is supposed to be. PLUS I don’t have to share the junk food! Enough said. Lisa kudos for correcting the error re Sam Baker song! Perhaps you should write the recap and I sincerely mean that. It’s been an up and down ride watching these youngsters figure out life even as vampires, witches and whatever the heck Tyler now is. I too am so glad Bonnie’s back. I don’t buy Caroline and Stefan either, Diana. But I’m glad on two counts; having never read the book(s?) I’m not worried about Elena/Stefan’s happily-ever-after (sorry) and secondly dead on this show doesn’t always stay dead. Who knows what the future holds. Rumor has it Nina may be leaving. The old adage don’t date your co-workers… so if the chemistry ain’t working… AWKWARD! If she goes, here’s my prediction. New blood such as Sarah might help satisfy our needs and rekindle (good) story lines. Further, she’s kind of “Elena-attractive” or better so me thinks the producers are thinking ahead. Until it takes it’s last breath, I’ll continue viewing. Imagine missing Caroline’s beautiful rendition of Go in Peace if you quit watching. That would have sucked!
The song she sings by Sam Baker is called “Go in Peace”
Ok someone has made a major mess of this show and that’s a fact. I get it why the death had to happen. The poor woman was being worn out going back and forth across the country. To star in one TVD and then write the other TO. Bonnie finally coming home that was a good thing. She’s been gone too long. Maybe can start having some decent storyline lines again. Stefan and Caroline not good wrong girl for Stefan to get messed up with. Tyler is more Caroline’s type since writers aren’t going to let her go with Klaus. Who is her OTtP. But to let her snap Elena’s neck mistake big mistake. And Stefan thinks he’s in love with this crazy person. Stefan always said he would protect Elena I guess it’s time for him to start again? Ya think? And I got all this from your article, FB & Twitter. I quit watching the show when Steroline crap started. Stefan and Elena belong together. I’ve read the book and I’ll stay with the real ending and not oh well you know. And you wonder why your ratings are dropping. I will ship Stelena till the last show airs. You might say I bleed Stelena. I will have hope till the end. And I will always believe in the epic love of Stefan & Elena. Oh yes almost forgot need to change the name from the Vampire Diaries to The Journals of Mystic Falls . Ok I’m off my soap box … Thank you
A bummer of an ep. indeed. The writers now want us Stelena fans to believe that what they had was ‘messed up’ instead of ‘epic’. But hay these are the same people who are for better or worse (worse!) selling us a love that they have called ‘toxic’ but still expect us to buy. Nice of them also to let Damon work out his own manpain through Liz. Nothing says closure like eulogizing your abuse vics mom. And having the nerve to call her a friend. Wonder how Liz would have felt if she knew of Damons ‘history’ with Caro? Though I’m glad she never did, because then we’d have to hear her say she forgave him. Damon does no wrong after all. Over all just another ep. where I was force fed Damon, in sad atempts to make me like him. You’re right btw Stelena forever. No matter what!
Only TVD’s would make a funeral about Caroline’s mom all about Damon. Lol, what happened to this show. Totally get why the ratings are so low.
oh yeah, the Stefan wanting Caroline is just gross. Brother and sister, Jerry Springer gross
