\'Vampire Diaries\': Michael Malarkey On Enzo\'s Backstory & Filming At Famed \'TWD\' Location
Michael Malarkey in ‘The Vampire Diaries’ (The CW)
Expect to see many different sides of Michael Malarkey's Enzo on this Thursday night's "The Vampire Diaries."
The series will step back in Enzo's timeline, presenting a new look at the character, back when he was a mere mortal.
"We're going to 1903, I believe, so it's a really lovely time period," Michael told

"I really enjoyed the costume and having a side parting in my hair," he said. "That's the frivolous nature of it, but… sometimes the hair makes the character. But yeah, it's a great time period and it's a great episode. I can't wait to see it."
"The Vampire Diaries" will head back to the start of the 20th century, checking in on Enzo as he works on trying to secure passage to America.

"He's trying to get on this passenger ship to go to New York where [there is] this doctor who's apparently able to cure tuberculosis, which is what he's dying of when we see him in the flashback," Michael revealed. "Basically, because he's sick, he's having trouble getting on the ship and then he meets this very regal woman who ends up taking him under her wing."
Fans of "The Vampire Diaries" who are caught up on "The Walking Dead" may find those dock scenes look a little familiar.
"We shot the scenes in the dock in Terminus, and we kind of obviously dressed it up to make it look like a docks area, but I remember walking in when I got dropped off and I was like, 'Oh my God! It's Terminus. Sweet!' because I'm a big fan of that show," Michael said. (Terminus is where Rick's group were reunited in the Season 4 finale, and where they were nearly killed at the start of Season 5.)
The flashbacks will be mixed with present day Enzo too, who will be having conversations with Sarah Salvatore.
"He's ended up developing a sort of soft spot for her, whereas he was just using her before. Now he kind of feels bad about what he's done and basically, he feels comfortable enough to divulge all this information about his past to her and so there's some great scenes with me and her where, in the present day, as he's recounting this information, [it] flickers back and forth with the flashbacks," Michael said.

Filming on Season 6 of "The Vampire Diaries" is currently wrapping up this week. It's been Michael's first as a series regular on The CW show, something that coincided with another first in his life.
"It's great," he said of his first season as a series regular (he first appeared on the show in Season 5). "And I'm so grateful to be given this opportunity and also, I just adore the cast and the crew and the producers and everybody on the show, so it's been extremely positive and you know, it was one of the many reasons I wanted to join on as a regular was because the company's so amazing. But this season for me was a complete whirlwind because I had a baby while filming. He was born in September, and so I've had my hands very full. It's gone so fast to be honest. It feels like we just started yesterday."
"The Vampire Diaries" airs Thursday at 8/7c on The CW.
