The most active bulkan on the north island of New Zealand is also the nation's deadliest volcano. I am referring to Ruapehu, which has erupted 54 times in the last 100 years.
Five volcanoes displayed plumes of steam, gas, or ash that day. From north to south, they are: Shiveluch, Bezymianny, Kizimen, Karymsky, and Zhupanovsky.
There are 50 active volcanoes in Alaska, two of which blow their tops every year. But nothing compares to the 15 cubic kilometers of magma that spewed from this bulkan in 1912.
During the past few weeks the activity of the bulkan continues at high levels associated with continuous vulcanian-type explosions from the summit crater.
