Chapter 3

Sam routinely huddled over his laptop, scanning useful information about Sarah’s friend as Dean parked the impala near the lot sa pamamagitan ng the auto shop. From the paglalarawan of Kay that they’d been given, so far no matches. Then Sam retrieved a full profile.

“So what’s the skinny on this chic dude?” Dean asked after ten minutos of boring silence. “Does she check out or what?”

Sam began to read his notes off the screen. “Okay her name is Kayleigh Forster, twenty-four, moved to New York about two years nakaraan and she’s a mechanic at Corbin’s Auto Garage. Kay’s parents died in a car accident when she was twelve, her mother was a teacher, her father…also a mechanic and when she was seven she began experiencing bizarre outbursts of schizophrenia.”

Dean rolled his eyes and huffed. “So what we’re dealing with is a chic-version of Norman Bates, minus the mother, motel and cheesy paliguan sequence. Great.”

Sam frowned at him. “Not quite, says here she’s only ever been hospitalized twice based on her sleeping patterns. Doctors couldn’t find anything out of the ordinary about her condition except for they did confirm unusual cell platelets in her blood. There’s no mention of her hearing any voices or seeing things. Kay has no record of any violent behavior up until last year, which doesn’t make any sense.”

“You’re right it doesn’t.” Dean warily rubbed his green eyes. As much as he told himself this was a waste of a hunt, he reluctantly followed his conscience. “So what do you think is pushing this girl? I mean if it’s not demons or ghosts, then what?”

“I don’t know…but whatever is happening to Kay, it’s something we definitely can’t ignore.” His tone became cold, switching into his brooding mannerism. “Dean…what if she’s pushed to the point where…we can’t help her?”

“So what if she is?” Dean added cynically. “Sammy we’re not doctors, all the aliases we carry can’t make up for what she needs. -Sarah should have called a therapist, psychoanalyst whatever cause this is way off our alley!”

“Dean this girl’s in trouble, she’s scared and alone!” Sam really knew how to backup his argument. “And I still can’t get what Sarah meant sa pamamagitan ng “Kay’s feelings weren’t her own” out of my head. Now until we find out what we’re dealing with, this case is ours.”

“Whatever dude, look if this whole thing turns out to be a crock, we’re hitting the road, got it?” warned Sam’s older and slightly irritated brother. “I’ve got better things to do than babysit some Jekyll/Hyde bitch!”

Dean’s restraint to help Kay annoyed Sam. After everything they’d been through, doubt seemed to always find a way to wedge itself between them.

“Just get out of the car, okay? And be nice.”

Dean swore under his breath quietly mocking his brother. They were met sa pamamagitan ng an older man in stained coveralls, wearing his takip backwards and on the front his sando displayed a tag with his last name Corbin. Obviously he was the owner of the shop.

Dean remembered how much his father loved fixing cars, taught him everything he knew about mechanics aside from hunting evil. The smell of grease and the blaring sound of bend-saws comforted him, made him feel almost like a normal person. Corbin extended his arm out to greet his mysterious young guests.

“Howdy there boys,” he sinabi friendlily, “How can I help you?”

Sam smiled sheepishly. “Yah hi, I’m Sam Milton and this is my brother Dean. We’re actually looking for a young woman who works here… Kay Forster?”

“We’ve been told she’s got quite the magic touch when it comes to heavy machinery,” Dean added charmingly, “As it just so happens I’ve got a sweet gal back there who could use a tune up.”

Following Dean’s gesture towards the 67’ Chevy impala, the man’s eyes lit up with excitement. “Well isn’t she somethin’! Gotta say I like your taste in classics this is just…” he could hardly contain the thrill to run his fingers over the siding. “I bet she’s worth a hell of a lot.”

“That’s my baby,” Dean chuckled, slapping the hood. “Without her well I’m…practically naked.”

Sam shrugged off the sentiment. “Do you think we could talk to Kay, just for a second?”

Corbin smirked gingerly then called back into the garage. “Kay, sweetie, gotta a live one over here with your name on it girl!”

Oh yah I bet that works thought Dean, but his skepticism turned maasim when he spotted the slender young woman in greased coveralls jogging towards them. She was quite the dish with her jet-black hair tied back in a ponytail and her gentle unguarded eyes. It was as if lightening stuck him in the chest because he was completely smitten sa pamamagitan ng this girl’s wholesome image. Oddly though, nothing about this girl had Sam and Dean thinking “psycho”.

“Attractive and a mechanic,” he whispered at Sam, “Now there’s a woman after my own heart.”

Sam shushed him without looking too obvious, extending his hand to the girl.

“Hi I’m Kay,” she sinabi kindly, “So what’s the damage?”

Dean’s felt his tongue tying in knots. “Hey I’m Dean this is my brother Sammy and I can I just say what a beautiful smile you have?”

Kay laughed at his harmless attempt to flirt while Sam addressed the issue. “We’re mga kaibigan of Sarah’s; she told us how good of a mechanic you were.”

“She shouldn’t have,” there was a hint of sadness in her voice. “I mean I’m only as good as any mechanic out here.” Her brown eyes instantly flew towards the impala, pacing herself around the hood to check out the engine. “A 67’ Chevy, nice! Haven’t seen a car like this since back at my dad’s tindahan in Southbury. I bet you guys get all the girls rolling around on these wheels.”

“So you know a lot about cars huh?” Dean asked interestedly.

“Know ‘em? I’ve been raised sa pamamagitan ng a mechanic so I pretty much speak the language.” Dean watched as her cheeks darkened a deep red. He found her soft voice as soothing as the hum of an engine. Even the way her hair fell around her ivory doll-like face beguiled him. “This might sound strange but… every car or motorcycle I’ve ever fixed, kinda believed it shared a soul with its owner. Guess that’s why I feel so content around them.”

Her breezed analysis seemed to amuse Dean, raising an eyebrow, though Sam was entirely focused on the case. He just didn’t understand how his brother could be so smitten with a woman he barely knew when his last relationship basically went down the toilet.

Clearing his throat, Sam decided not to waste anymore time beating around the bush. “So how long have you known Sarah anyway?”

Kay’s smile vanished, giving Dean the sinking feeling that she was feeling a little suspicious of them. “Almost two years, she’s kinda my only real friend in this city. Why do you ask?”

“No reason…except that she’s been worried about you Kay.”

“Worried? Why?” the young woman was taken aback.

“I think you know why,” Sam nagkomento easily, hoping not to cause her to panic. “Listen, my brother and I we… help people with situations that they can’t explain.”

She nodded skeptically until Dean stepped in. “What he means is… if there’s anything you want to tell us…we’ll understand.”

Kay swallowed hard, creating puwang between Sam and Dean and herself. They could sense the fear in her reaction. Sam began to slowly approach her, arms stretched either side submissively.

“Hey it’s alright, we just want to help.” He sinabi softly to the girl. “Don’t be scare please.”

Kay eyes were glazed but in her face they saw she somehow believed in their honesty. She went from friendly and sweet to uncertain and cautious, Sam and Dean certainly couldn’t rule out the split personality theory. But she gave them her consent to pull her aside from the tindahan in order to discuss her problem. At this point the boys were committed to help her and she needed them to.

“It’s not what you think,” Kay applied leaning against the door of the impala. “I’m not crazy or suicidal or anything these…things just keep happening to me.”

“So you can’t explain what they are?” Sam pressed, he knew deep down she was holding back something since they pulled her away from the sanctuary of the shop. “Does it happen at random?”

She shook her head. “No! I don’t know what it is but…whenever I get these feelings…it’s like I have no control over my emotions or my actions.” Kay buried her face in her palms, sliding her tiny hands over her jet hair. “For instance, sometime the feelings I get are all mellow and I feel like I’m on acid or something… Then other times… I’ll feel this rage to hurt someone or…myself. It’s like I’m… channeling somebody else.”

Dean cocked an eyebrow. “Channeling?”

“Yeah, kinda like a human antenna, only worse.” She imitated a telebisyon antenna sprouting from her head, causing Dean to smirk a little. “When I get these feelings I tend to act on impulse without thinking… like some sort of invisible push which causes an electrical strain throughout the muscles in my body.”

Sam’s curiosity was gnawing at him. “What’s it feel like? Does it…feel like something is taking you over?”

Kay’s face was nearly vacant with a glimmer of sarcasm.

“Honestly… it’s the single most excruciating experience of my life... Try picturing your whole body being torn in opposite directions until your Buto feel that they’re gonna snap like twigs.”

This notion made Sam and Dean’s skin crawl. Something was definitely supernatural about this girl, they just couldn’t figure out what.

“Kay, how long have these occurrences been going on?” asked Dean crucially, folding his leather dyaket sleeves over his chest.

“Cliff notes version…since I turned thirteen.” Kay frigidly admitted, hugging her arms around her trembling body. “Before that…these feelings were mild not like they are now… never as bad as this.”

“And what about Sarah, have you told her anything about this?” Sam implied heavily.

“She figured something was up when I threatened to jump off her two-story roof, so yah. But Sarah… she just doesn’t understand… she doesn’t know what this is like… and I never want her to.”

Normally this was Sam’s cue to comfort the victim of circumstance but instead his older brother beat him to the punch, putting his hand on her shoulder and giving it a gentle squeeze.

“You’re not alone in this anymore Kay.” His voice was like velvet. “Don’t worry my brother and I… we’re gonna figure this out.”

But Kay was reluctant to accept his gesture. “No!” she scolded fierily, pulling away. “No I don’t want anyone’s help with this!” Kay’s voice became defensive. “There is no “we”, I’m the one going through this not you! You don’t know anything about me! And I don’t want Sarah or anybody else to get hurt on my account.”

Sam tried to intervene in the situation. He saw how scared she was and how much pain she was suffering. If anyone could relate to a growing darkness inside, he was the candidate for submitting to evil’s advantages. “Kay listen … I don’t know what’s happening to you but I understand what it’s like to feel different from the rest of the world. I know what it’s like to have something inside that you can’t control. If you just give us a chance… we can try to help you make sense of all this…please.”

“No this is my problem!” tears were streaming down her face, she was in agony. Dean’s puso went out to her as he continued to watch Kay struggle with her emotions. But she refused them. She wanted to shut them out just like she’d done to Sarah. “I think you should both leave now!”

“Kay wait!” Dean tried to grasp her arm to prevent her from storming off; she was too fast for him.

“No, stay away from me Dean!” she warned hurrying back towards the safety of the garage, leaving the boys to puzzle over the conversation which took a turn for the worst. Whatever was happening to Kay, Sam and Dean knew she wasn’t safe. They were too stubborn to just abandon her problem.

Adam had been pacing the house for the past five minutes, once in a while pausing to sneak a peek out the window in case of unnatural intruders.
