why at the end of the first season when kiba dies are they still wolf's or are they human?

Kiba is the only one that does not officially die in the series. When they come back we are unsure if they are human or wolf, we can only assume they are either or. The manga ends completely differently and doesn't have a lot of the same characters, so we can't really tell...
