Yup, Pagsulat fanfiction of a fanfiction. I couldn't help noticing the parallels between Nick and Pete and had to write something about it.

Pete remembered the people he had killed at Shaffer’s.

He had justified it to himself, saying it was the right thing to do, that there wasn’t enough room for everyone, that someone had to do the dirty work to protect others.

Pete remembered the man his nephew had killed. He knew it was his fault – hadn’t he told Nick that if he saw someone aiming at one of them, he shouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger? Nick did it for the same reason he did, because he felt it was the right thing. Because he was trying to protect his people.

---

Pete remembered how he had taken Nick hunting. He had been too soft, too sensitive to even kill a roebuck. Pete had told him to toughen up before taking the shot himself. And here he was, killing a grown man.

---

Pete remembered the one-eyed boy he had brought to Shaffer’s.

He had been covered in filth and scars, looking madami like a wild animal than a person, not speaking at all. He told himself he had done the right thing sa pamamagitan ng bringing him to Shaffer’s. Surely the place would be better than making him fend for himself out in the wild. But as he remembered the people he had been forced to kill, the people he had seen be deprived of food, the people he had seen being used up and then killed off when they couldn’t work anymore, he wondered if it really was the right choice after all.

Pete had tried without success to convince Adam to leave Shaffer’s with him. When he made it clear that he didn’t want to leave, despite Pete’s insistence, Pete swore to himself he wouldn’t fail a kid like that again.

Pete remembered how Nick had locked Clementine in a shed. Again, Pete knew it was his fault – he told Nick he couldn’t let people take advantage of him after he let that Matt boy trick him into doing his work for him. He hadn’t even noticed Matt was lying about being sick until Pete told him. He was always so gullible, so soft. Pete told him he shouldn’t be so easily manipulated sa pamamagitan ng people trying to garner his sympathy susunod time. And here he was, locking an injured kid in a shed.

---

After all the harsh words and mapait arguments between the two of them, Pete wondered if it would have been better if he hadn’t been so hard on Nick, if he hadn’t told him so often to stop being so soft and toughen up, if he had been madami patient and less quick to criticize. If he had even told him once how he really cared about him, how he didn’t want to lose him… but his feelings wouldn’t do anything to help Nick. If he wanted to keep Nick alive, he had to expose him to harsh truths. Being nice wouldn’t keep him alive, knowing exactly how harsh the world the world they lived in was and how to survive in it would. Still, Pete often wondered if he hadn’t tried hard enough with his nephew.
