High school exit exams are a form of standardized testing which students first take in 10th grade (sophomores in high school, generally 15-year-olds). The exams are aimed at testing basic competency in English and mathematics, and are generally mandated at the state level. Students are required to pass the exit exam in order to be graduated from high school, in addition to whatever course completion requirements are imposed by the county Board of Education and the school itself.

If a student doesn't pass the exit exam in 10th grade, the student will take the exam again in 11th grade (sixteen), several times if necessary, and the exams are held even more times in 12th grade (seventeen) if needed. States generally earmark special funds for remedial education for students who do not pass the exit exam - these funds are designated for special training which students enter if not passing an exit exam; the training is to develop the basic English and math skills tested in the exit exams. School approaches vary if a student cannot pass the exit exam by the end of 12th grade, but in any case, they are not graduated if they do not pass the exit exam (1).

The stated goals of high school exit exams include (but are not limited to):
* meeting US federal government requirements for standardized testing
* ensuring that graduating seniors have a baseline competency in English and math skills
* identify students who need help in basic reading, writing and math skills before their senior year

So, after that introduction, the debate question:
Do the benefits of high school exit exams outweigh the detriments?

For the purposes of this debate, "benefits" refer to desirable results for the students, the schools, the states and society in general, and "detriments" refer to undesirable results for the students, the schools, the states and society in general.

1 - A note: exams which evaluate the capabilities of graduating high school seniors but do not gate graduation are not "exit exams" for the purposes of this debate. Such are more properly termed "exit evaluations".
