I may change my animation. But my beef with TLM is how little they utilized backgrounds, and how everything is lined in black. A point about this countdown I'd like to make is I love TLM's animation, the style and flow screams Disney to me. But it has never impressed me even as a child. Another example is I'm not particularly fond of Pocahontas's style compared to other DP films, but it constantly impresses me. The use of colour, the lines, the movement. It's gorgeous and amazing.
The Little Mermaid's animation was very nice, but that's really all you can say for it. It was very fluid and everything, but they were capable of that in Snow White. The underwater moments never really seemed underwater to me, it just looked like there was cool lighting, and there were a few bubbles. They definitely could have done a lot more with that. Also, with movies like Sleeping Beauty, there is so much detail in the background, and we see that with all the other ones but Snow White and Mulan, and Snow White was still pretty detailed as well as being the first animated movie, and in Mulan that was part of the style of the animation, and even then there were nice colors and whatnot. In TLM most of the backgrounds (or at least a fair number of them) are just a lot of varying colors of gray swirled around, which (and this is a personal thing) really bother me. While the animation is undoubtedly lovely, there is really nothing that you could classify as impressive about it.
As much as I love Mulan, the Animation is a little bit lazy at parts. For example that the number of the soldiers in Shang's troup conveniently dwindles in some scenes. Yes, the fight at the pass looks good, but that's more or less an improved version of the stampede in Lion King. I like some of the Art Work, and when they reference the chinese watercolour style, but they are not that consistent with the style. Cinderella for example is consistent in the use of empty space, Mulan isn't.
So, as much as it hurts, and as great as the work on the characters themselves are, my vote goes to Mulan.
The Little Mermaid's animation is amazing, the colors, the shapes, everything is so pretty!
By away thank you Swanpride for your explanation last time, it was helpful :)
