In the original tale it isn't. The older stepsister nicknamed her Cinderwench because after she did her work she laid by the fire and got dirty with cinders. However, the younger sister was nicer and nicknamed her Cinderella.

In the Disney movie it says that she was named Cinderella before they even introduce the stepmother. So yes, it is her name.

Disney's Cinderella doesn't say otherwise.
But in a lot of Non-Disney fairytale books, her name is Ella, nicknamed Cinderella.

^Only in retellings, I think. I hardly think a French author who lived centuries ago would name the princess of his tale Ella.

Good to hear :) In somebody's article they said her real name was "Ella" and I was like: WHAT?

The "ella" is just a French-sounding ending. "Cinderella" is meant to be demeaning, but the real name is never given.
In the movie though, the name of Cinderella is given in the very first line, which says that the name her father gave her is Cinderella. So yes, this is her real name. It does sound quite nice in most languages either way.

Her real name was originally Ella (even in the disney tale) but every one called her cinderella because she would sit by the fire place and cinders would fly on her face so (Cinderella) or Cinder-wench was a name her stepsisters called her to make fun of her (in the disney tale too) but her original name in her FIRST fairly tale was french I think it was Cindtrillion (or something like that) Grimm brothers called her Ella plain and simple though so her NAME buy birth is Ellla (hence 'Ella Enchanted' the movie)
In the disney story her real name is cinderella but the article you read was probably saying Cinderella in general

^Actually, it never says in the movie or any Disney material her name is Ella. "Cendrillon" is her name in French, and Disney based their movie out of this version, not the Grimms' (who named her Aschenputell actually, not Cinderella).

In the movie, she is. They never call her differently. Don't even say how "Cinderella" was just a cruel name bestowed on her. The opening narration makes it clear her name was Cinderella from beginning to end.

@silverrose1991 well of coarse the narrator would say cinderella because it's still and always has been the story of Cinderella. But yeah your right about Aschenputell. I just think her real name is Ella feel free to disagree :)

TheFabulousFan - The narrator calls Cinderella before she (narrator) even introduces the stepfamily. If it was a nickname given by the stepsisters she would have said something like "they called her Cinderella, because she was always covered in ashes".

I read in a Disney book when I was little that her real name was Ella and they called her Cinderella because she was covered in cinders. It was the first time I ever heard of cinders. In the picture, it showed those criss-cross lines on the white thing Cinderella wears on her head. And I thought "So that's how she got that weird name." But I never read that in another book, nor does it say that in the movie. I only read it online. But I would like to think that was how she got her name anyway.

In the Disney movie it is Cinderalla. In the original story it's Ella, and Cinderalla is a nickname given to her by her step-family becuese she cleaned the cinders.
