Gruvia shippers, give me one reason why I should consider this pairing as anything madami than bad comic relief;

No, before you burst out in a rage and type out an entire paragraph in uppercase insulting my shipping preferences, hear me out.

I tried to like Gruvia, I really did. I've always been aware, even before I began pagbaba FT, that Gruvia was a very popular pairing, and one cannot survive in a fandom where the majority ships a pairing you don't like without bursting an artery from sheer annoyance, so I tried to force myself to ship it, but I can't.

If you guessed that my main problem with it is Juvia's behavior towards Gray, you were right.

Let me preface this sa pamamagitan ng saying I don't dislike Juvia sa pamamagitan ng any means, but it disturbs me that the shippers are playing off Juvia's obsessive and stalker behavior as "cute" and "funny", especially when Gray has shown time and again that he's uncomfortable with it. Others act like Gray owes Juvia his love, and every little thing he does that doesn't fit into their little romance guidebook has hordes of angry shippers bashing him left, right and center. Their reason for this? "Juvia loves him so much and how dare he treat her like this". Yeah right.

The only reason Juvia's stalking and obsessing gets a free pass is because she's female, and attractive. Replace her with a dude who isn't handsome and no one would find it romantic or funny anymore. Heck, let's take Ichiya for example. Ichiya is obsessed with Erza and occasionally stalks her. Do I see people cheering for Ichiya to get together with Erza? No. Likewise, Simon was devoted to Erza and did everything for her, and yet it didn't change the fact that she didn't pag-ibig him romantically and only saw him as a friend. Do I see people screaming bloody murder at Erza and calling her terrible for not returning his feelings? Nah. That is the double standards with Gruvia.

Last but not least, this pairing basically sends out a message that if you stalk someone past the point of a restraining order, eventually they will want you. I don't know about you, but that's not the best messa

(CONTINUED) best message to give the young readers of this manga. I would have been okay with Gruvia had it grown out of the "Stalker With a Crush" trope at one point, but now we're madami than 400 chapters in and nothing has changed, no development whatsoever. So I ask you again, why should I consider this a valid ship and not an unhealthy one-sided relationship in which one party simultaneously stalks and idealizes the other to the point she has an entire shrine of him in her room and washes her private parts with a sponge shaped like his face? I ask you again, would you find this cute or romantic anymore had the genders been reversed?

I have to say you certainly have strong feelings of antipathy towards this pairing, you made that quite clear. I would answer but I do not ship FT characters and you're requesting a shipper to answer. Besides, plenty of people on Tumblr who are, like me, neutral have answered this far better than I ever could.

I'll only say that this stalker dynamic is portrayed as 'cute' because I'm afraid that is popular in Japanese anime and manga. It's nothing new. But do remember this 'romantic sub-plot' is not merely comic relief. It has endured numerous intense, dramatic and emotional moments. To say it has not developed whatsoever is hard to believe as far as I'm concerned.

That's all I'll say. Watch out for shippers but I tell you they are nowhere near as vicious as their 'Gray and Lucy' counterparts. Just look at Tumblr for that, scary stuff.

But 'bad comic relief'? Not really. But then again, this is why I like hearing other people's opinions. It's very interesting to see what people who despise this combination have to say and why because it would be boring if everyone liked it. Some say it's an enthralling pairing, some say it's the best with the best development while many others like yourself resent it and see it as poorly written and only full of negatives. Just goes to ipakita how much opinions and interpretations vary between shippers and non-shippers or even amongst those who are neutral in FT.

All the best.

Thanks for answering. Admittedly my feelings on Gruvia (or any other ship at that) wouldn't be this negative if it weren't for the shippers. I'm not going to start a pagtatalo on which ship has the better fanbase because there are bad apples everywhere. Also I am on tumblr so I know how vicious shippers can be all too well, which is why I opted to ask this tanong here; while the probability of anyone answering me would be significantly lower, at least I would not receive death threats.

Also to clarify: I begrudgingly accept that Gruvia is a very real possibility, but that doesn't stop me from hating the way it is executed. That moment you posted above? It was sweet, and one of Gruvia's rare meaningful moments. The problem is that whenever Gruvia gets any development, Mashima immediately craps on it afterwards with comic relief. It's like this ship takes 2 steps pasulong and 80 steps backwards.

The main female and male leads falling in pag-ibig is a cliché I'm exhausted with. But admittedly some handle it well, just not FT. I don't read Naruto but I'm aware he did not end up with the main female and instead a supporting character. Like with Erza and Jellal and in my opinion Gray and Juvia, it's a lot madami interesting when it's a main character and a supporting character. Erza and Jellal is much madami engaging than Natsu and Lucy, especially since both are better characters and Jellal is a 'criminal' and part of a rogue, vigilante guild. Their past is better as well and the pair actually feel like they can advance the others character. I cannot get you to agree with me and would prefer you to keep your own opinions, but I believe the same with Gray and Juvia. This contrast of how they approach pag-ibig and their past, which Juvia moved on from while Gray remains haunted sa pamamagitan ng it, makes them work well together. Notably, Juvia is the only person Gray has allowed (other than Silver) to see him cry and has embraced. It's sort of Gray allowing someone in, Juvia is melting away the ice. Damn, that sounded cheesy, my apologies. BBut above all else, ErzaxJellal and GrayxJuvia are much madami interesting with a better dynamic than NatsuxLucy who are your generic main character pairing and little more. They never have any significant moments like the former and have stayed the same, hence why they are so boring. It has been very nice speaking with someone you can have a smart pagtatalo with who listens but at the same time defends their opinion calmly rather than get aggressive. Have a good week and all the best.

I have to admit, Gruvia can seem stalkerish and if I take a look, it's vaugley uncomfortable. But yes, Juvia is a lot for comic relief, that's how Mashima made her. But as the manga has progressed, she's far less like this then before. She's starting to actually think about Grey as a human, and not just an obssesion. So the main things are now : she's changing, and that stalker like tendacy was always intended for comic relief.

Thanks for your input. I guess I can never win with Mashima's crass 'comic relief'. Like I said, the only reason Juvia's antics are considered cute and funny is because she's female and attractive, so it really bugs me when shippers use the 'comic relief' excuse to handwave Gruvia's issues away. Also just 3 chapters nakaraan Juvia was complaining that she's stuck with Team B and not with Gray, so honestly I haven't seen much progress there.

From a neutral, non-shipping perspective, I think Juvia has always loved Gray rather him being an obsession. This is probably over-analysing but consider that Juvia spent her entire life alone and devoid of pag-ibig until suddenly Gray takes her rain away and she feels attracted to him. Basically, she is not used to expressing 'love' so here we have her over-expressive gestures and early stalker days. But the stalker is long gone, the last time I remember was the Tower of Heaven. Gray however never has been an FT character who expresses such feelings. Himself also being unfamiliar with them. But as opposed to Juvia, he rejects them and so her contrasting nature 'freaks' him out. It creates this antithesis between them: Expressive over-loving girl and the Closed-off cold man. I wouldn't say she never saw him as a human. Tenrou Island shows this as does the Tartarus Arc. Both ipakita she genuinely 'loves' Gray and it isn't just a physical attraction. The problem is that if Gray even made the slightest romantic gesture then the tension is gone so this dynamic has to continue. But at this point I personally believe Mashima can do so much madami with either of them if he got them together. It would alter their characters slightly and perhaps provide a new comedy style that isn't so 'crass' and open up potential development. But this is Mashima we're talking about so don't expect anything new right now. All the best:)

Honestly, I really agree with you. I've watched Fairy Tail a few times, and at first I really hated Juvia.
Hate might be strong word, but I always found her a bit creepy and unnerving. Her stalking Gray was kinda really creepy. I also tried to like her and the prospect of the ship. I couldn't voice my opinions because the people I talked to about Juvia had strong feelings about her and thought she was cute. But after watching the ipakita a bit I can see a bit of both sides, I guess.
Juvia can certainly be creepy, there is absoulutley no denying that. She comes of a bit too strong and weird. But she also has a friendly and kind side to her. She accepts Gray fully and is kind to him, kind of like a mother and son relationship, except less of a son and madami of a lover. She can also be kind to others, as we saw when she fought the gitara guy with Lucy. She sinabi she really loved Fairy Tail, not just because of Gray.
So even though I still don't fully pag-ibig Juvia or the ship of Gray and Juvia, I can't really change anything with just my opinion so I'm trying harder to like Juvia. But the plushies and soap bars need to go.
