"The Battle of the Bastards" was one of the most epic episodes we\'ve seen on television in a very long time, if ever. As it turns out, the battle was almost even bigger. The only problem was that getting some of the co-stars to cooperate was too difficult. In this case, the co-stars in question were the horses being ridden into battle; they were originally going to be a much bigger part of the fight, but they just wouldn\'t go crashing into people like the director wanted.
It\'s not necessarily that shocking to learn that horses weren\'t that interested in running into people. However, director Miguel Sapochnik explained during the
panel at San Diego Comic-Con that originally the plan was not to crush Jon Snow\'s forces with people, but with horses.
Originally, we were going to have a lot of horses, like seven horses deep. They were going to charge the horses and then actually surround the allied troops and crush them with horses. The problem is that if you run horses at people, they don\'t like it. The first time they were alright, but the second time they were like, \'I don\'t really want to run at these people, I\'m not going.\'
Horses are big animals but they\'re awfully fragile. We all know what happens to horses when they break their legs. So do the horses, and as such, they tend to avoid stepping on things, like people. The horses probably didn\'t know what to expect on the first take so they went for it without much problem, but after getting a taste of what the director wanted, they ultimately decided they\'d just rather not. It\'s somewhat difficult to tell a horse to do something when it doesn\'t want to do it.
Once the plan with the horses faded away, they decided to simply "run people at people" rather than the horses. Then, somebody had the bright idea that after a large number of people in a fixed location get dead, they become a pile of corpses. This was how that aspect of the battle came to be. We saw in the episode how difficult it was to maneuver on the battlefield as more and more people fell.
All in all, it looks like we might owe the horses a debt of gratitude. If using the animals had worked, it would not have led the crew to the creative thinking that resulted in the battle that we got. While we\'re still fairly sure the original concept would have been awesome, at this point, it\'s basically impossible to think of any other Battle of the Bastards version that could have happened.
Would you have liked to see more action on horseback, or do you prefer the grittiness that was the fight on the ground?
