Chapter 16: A Phone Call
“I wonder when I’ll transform with Akane,” Laina smiled under the scorching heat that came from the sun. It was Friday today and studies were due in though madami homework would be coming through the weekend. “Soon, I think.” Akane shrugged. “I’m not sure Laina.” “That’s okay!” Laina laughed, grinning happily. “I just hope I’ll be susunod to transform!” “Of course you will,” Asuka smiled, giving her a slight push in the shoulder. “Hey Akane!” Akane turned her head to the side and saw Shizuko running to where she stood, with Theresa flying susunod to her. “Shizuko!” Akane grinned. “’Morning,” “Good morning, Akane. Theresa’s feeling a lot better today so she told me just for today that she wanted to come to school.”
“That’s great!” Akane smiled, glancing at Theresa who was already talking with Asuka and Laina. “So,” Akane began walking. “What’s up?” “I was going to ask you the same,” Shizuko said. “What do you mean?” “Did something happen last night, Akane?” Shizuko asked, sounding worried for some reason. “Why? What happened?” “Well …” Shizuko pursed her lips as she lowered her wavering eyes. “Kaito … came to my place late last night.” Shizuko sounded … cautious and Akane’s eyes slightly narrowed.“Why? Did … he see something?” In Akane’s mind, she prayed to God and Heaven that Kaito didn’t see her with Seiji in the theme park. Shizuko inhaled a deep breath. “Yes, he did.” “Oh my gosh, no!” Akane cried, burying her head in her hands. “Oh no! He’s mad, isn’t he? He’s furious as hell, I know he is!” Akane wept, tears rolling down the sides of her arms. “I didn’t mean it Shizuko! It’s just that I felt so bad for Seiji that I felt like I had to–” “Shh, shh. It’s okay, Akane.” Shizuko embraced her arms around her friend.
“Yes, Kaito’s mad at you for going out with him last night, but I’m not. I’m sure you did it for a reason and you have to tell him, Akane.” Akane sniffled and stiffed a nod. Then she pulled away. “Akane?” Shizuko asked, cocking her head to the side. Akane lifted her eyes, waiting. “Do you pag-ibig Seiji instead Kaito?” Akane froze, her eyes widened in shock. She didn’t know what to say. “Um …” Her eyes glistened a little. “I don’t know.” She mumbled. “It’s too hard Shizuko. I just … don’t know what feelings I have for Seiji. I pag-ibig Kaito … I think.” “See?” Shizuko snapped her fingers at Akane’s face. “There’s the problem! After the time you’ve spent with Seiji, it’s hard for you to let go of him, isn’t it?” “That’s not how it is Shizuko!” Akane’s face went maroon. “I don’t have feelings for Seiji and he knows that my puso belongs to Kaito!” “Or does it?” Shizuko arched an eyebrow as a smirk appeared on her lips.
“Come on, Shizuko,” Asuka smiled at her. “Don’t make fun of your friend and my pixie owner,” “Oh, I’m not teasing her Asuka.” Shizuko waved her hands with uncertainty written on her face. “I just want to know who Akane likes at the moment.” Asuka shrugged and stared at Akane who was biting her lips while looking at the ground. “Well that’s Akane’s decision, isn’t it? She knows who she loves though she probably doesn’t want to tell you,” Shizuko sighed and nodded. “Fine, fine. I won’t prod her into any madami about the subject. How’s that, Akane?” Akane nodded stiffly. “You know you can tell me. Okay?” Shizuko asked as they both sauntered to the school. “Yeah.” Akane replied.
“I’m back!” Akane cried as she opened the front door of her house. “Took you a while,” A familiar voice filled the room and made Akane give out a slight scream as she leapt. There, leaning against a wooden post between the hall and the kitchen, was Kaito. “Geez, Kaito!” Akane hissed, shutting the door behind her. “You know how I don’t like getting scared.” Akane told him. “Just felt like it, is all.” Kaito explained. “That’s a bad excuse for a human being,” Akane muttered as she walked to him. “Akane,” Kaito said. Akane peered at Kaito for a segundo because when he sinabi her name, it sounded rasp and dry like he was choking or something. “Do you know what you did to me last night?” Akane gulped, trying to steady herself with her arms. Her mind went blank the minuto he sinabi that.
“K-Kaito,” She whispered, tears filling her eyes. “I didn’t mean it. It just happened because I felt sorry for Seiji. Kaito, if you’re mad at me then be mad, but don’t hate me, please.” Akane pursed her lips as her fingers trembled slightly. “Akane,” Kaito clasped Akane’s fingers. “You broke your promise. You know that and now, I’m not sure if you pag-ibig me anymore.” “That’s not true Kaito! I still pag-ibig you!”
Akane gasped as the tears streamed down her face. “Do you still care about me Akane? Or is my pag-ibig not good enough for you? How can I chan–?” Lips abruptly crushed against his, stopping his sentence. Akane pulled away, taking a breath. “Does that give you enough proof?” She asked, worried. Kaito exhaled and stared into Akane’s eyes. “You think?” He smiled after a long moment. Akane grinned and leaned up on her toes to hug him. “I’m sorry I hurt you Kaito. It hurts me to see you in pain.” “Me too Akane, me too.” Kaito sinabi in her hair. “It’s okay.” He broke the hug and smiled at her. “You won’t … you won’t hurt me again … will you, Akane?”Akane nodded and placed a hand at the side of his face. “I promise, Kaito.”
Meanwhile, far from Akane’s house, lying lazily in a puno that grew susunod to a certain someone’s bedroom, was Seiji. Aruto was there with him too. “Why are we here exactly, Seiji?” Aruto asked, confused. Seiji opened a kulay-lila eye and a smirk flaunted across his face. “I just want to have a small talk with Akane’s best friend, that’s all Aruto.” “Sounds like you’ve got something up your sleeve.” Aruto smiled, his eyes glistened in the sun’s rays.
“Hello Shiini!” A girl’s voice sounded in the house. “How are you? Where’s Mama?” “She’s going to come tahanan soon, Shizzy!” A blissful girl’s voice replied. “Are you sure? Okay. Did you eat?” “Don’t worry Shizzy. I can take care of myself! I stayed here sa pamamagitan ng myself too many times, right?” “Yeah,” Shizuko sighed. “Go do your homework. I’ll try and see if there’s anything Mama can cook when she gets back.” There wasn’t a reply but Seiji heard heels clicking to the room he was susunod to. Shizuko appeared in her room and just as she was about to get dressed into her tahanan clothes, Seiji knocked on the window pane …
“So …” Akane sighed. She was in her room with Kaito, lying on her kama in his arms. “What is it?” Kaito looked at Akane’s uncertain face. “Um … no, it’s nothing Kaito.” Akane smiled. “Don’t worry, I’m not thinking about much.” “You know you can tell me anything Akane, right?” Kaito squeezed his hands around hers. “Yes, I know Kaito.” Akane nodded. He bit his lip and leaned his head back, away from Akane’s face. “Akane, do you wonder why I don’t halik you much?” Akane shrugged. “Well, I did the first time. But if it’s because of a reason, then I won’t force you to.” “Akane, you pag-ibig me, don’t you?” Kaito murmured quietly. “Yes, I do.” Akane answered, pulling away from Kaito so she could stare at his face. Kaito’s face slightly tensed before he stared deeply into Akane’s eyes.
“Then tell me why you just sounded a little hesitant just now.” “Kaito,” Akane groaned. “Why? Why do you feel this way?” “I don’t know myself, Akane.” Kaito said, running a hand through his hair before continuing. “But I can’t help feeling that you might, well, be in pag-ibig with Seiji.” “Kaito, don’t think like that okay?” Akane begged. “I don’t pag-ibig him and I won’t shed any to him. Only to you, Kaito because I pag-ibig you madami than you know!” Akane grabbed Kaito’s hands. “I pag-ibig you so much Kaito. Don’t think that I don’t pag-ibig you because I do.” Kaito bit his lip. “Kaito?” Akane whispered, lifting his chin with her hand. He waited. “Can I … halik you?”
Shizuko turned her head to the window and her eyes went as wide as saucers. “SEIJI?!” She screamed, rushing to open her window. “What one earth are you doing here?! I was about to get dressed!” “Sorry,” Seiji apologized quietly. “Shizzy?” Shiini’s voice came outside Shizuko’s door. “What happened?” “N-nothing Shiini. I’m okay, don’t worry.” Shizuko tried to keep her voice normal. “Okay,” Shiini sinabi before Seiji and Shizuko heard her steps disappear to the kitchen. Shizuko turned sharply to Seiji, her eyes glistening slightly. “What do you want, perv?” “I just want to have a small chat with Akane’s close friend.” Shizuko’s eyes froze. “What do you want to know about Akane?” Seiji jumped into her room, landing quietly on the floor.
Seiji smiled and sighed. “It seems that you have a little friend in your room. A pixie, I’m guessing?” Shizuko crossed her arms over her chest. “Tell me what you want to know, Seiji.” Seiji smiled. “You’re simply just trying to make me get out. Am I right, Kato Shizuko?” Shizuko glared at Seiji. “Ever since you came to H.S.H.S (a/n: Hishima bituin High School) you’ve caused trouble.” “Really? Hasn’t Akane told you about what happened last night?” “No,” Shizuko replied, pursing her lips. “She just told me she feels sorry for you and that’s it.” “Really?” Seiji shut his eyes, smiling. “Okay. I’ll tell you what I want to know.” Shizuko waited.
“What did Akane tell you this morning at school?” Seiji asked. “I told you already.” Shizuko said. “Hmm.” Seiji pursed his lips before he breathed slowly. “Alright, I’ll go now. Tell Akane that I stopped by, okay?” “Why?” Shizuko asked narrowing her eyes at him. But Seiji just shook his head with a mischievous smile and then left without another word.
“Akane!” Sakura cried, opening Akane’s bedroom door. Sakura stood, motionlessly, as her eyes blinked at the sight of her step-sister and Kaito staring at her with astonishment with their faces inches apart. “Sorry, sorry!” Sakura shut her eyes tight as she turned her face away from them. “I should have knocked!” “No, no! Sakura, it’s okay!” Akane quickly went to Sakura and kneeled in front of her. Sakura warily turned her face to Akane and blinked her eyes open. She sighed, relieved and then she slapped herself in the forehead. “Next time, I’ll be sure to knock ‘cause I don’t want to come in here seeing you in kama with Kaito, Akane.”
Akane’s face immediately turned scarlet. Even her neck became the exact colour. “S-Sakura, you know t-t-that won’t–” “Yes, I know Akane.” Sakura patted Akane’s cheek. “Now, someone’s on the phone for you.” Sakura held the house phone in front of Akane. “Huh?” Akane blinked, surprised. “Who is it?” “Sounds like a girl ... she’s probably in your class.” Sakura shrugged while Akane received the phone from her. “O-okay … thanks Sakura.” Sakura skipped out of the room, humming a lullaby she probably made up herself.
“Hello?” “Hello, is this Hitoru Akane?” A soft, girl’s voice was heard on the other line. “Speaking,” Akane gulped. A small gasp cracked in the receiver and Akane glanced at Kaito who was staring at her intently. But before she could ask the girl what was wrong, she had already hung up and there were only beeps in the receiver. “Who was it Akane?” Kaito asked as she lowered the phone from her ear. “I don’t know, Kaito.” Akane sighed.
‘Who was she?’ Akane thought, feeling confused. ‘Does she know me?’
