walang tiyak na layunin dialectics: 7500
Hello and welcome to the segundo part of walang tiyak na layunin Dialectics, a series of short artikulo where I review movies! Today we're gonna take a look at a horror movie which I've been anticipating for quite some time now: 7500
Like before, if you haven't seen the movie, I must warn you: we'll be discussing some key elements of the plot, so obviously: MAYOR SPOILER ALERT!
Missed opportunities
Although the cover of the DVD may suggest that this is a disaster movie, such implication couldn't be further from the truth! It's a horror movie! Let's jump into the world of fear, shall we?
The entire story takes place aboard an airliner, on its way from America to Tokyo. In the first half hour, we are introduced to a set of one dimensional characters: a honeymoon couple with a quiet husband and a hypochondriac, very annoying wife, who's obsessed with shoving her wedding mga litrato down on everyone's throat. There's a petty thief, a young girl, who's worried about being pregnant, there's a bunch of young people, going on a trip together, there's a young couple who are breaking up, there's a lonely goth girl who's fascinated sa pamamagitan ng death, two flight attendants who are re-evaluating their relationships with the man of their choice. And finally, there's a silent creepy guy who brings a mysterious old wooden box aboard...
Like I said, all of the characters are pretty one dimensional: they act only within the confines of my paglalarawan above, but altogether, such a mixture of many different characters is quite interesting and makes the atmosphere madami realistic with this diversity.
The exposition (the part where we are introduced to the main characters) is pretty long, especially, if you look at the time frame the movie works with: 1 oras 19 minutes! Ending credits INCLUDED! All right, you sit through 30 minutes, anticipating that something will happen. Because except for the wooden box, nothing happened so far that would imply this is a ghost horror movie. “Eh, we still got a good 40 minutos to go, this will be fun!” I thought.
Okay, so fast pasulong to the part when the silent, creepy guy dies in a pretty disturbing manner. A puso attack or something, but the cause of his death remains unclear throughout the entire movie. Now we're cookin'! From the moment he's dead, some creepy stuff start to happen on the plane.
It almost falls out of the sky for starters... after the passengers survive a sudden de-pressurizing event of the cabin they start to disappear one sa pamamagitan ng one. It is implied that the spirit of the dead guy possessed the entire plane. But we never actually see what freak out the poor, unfortunate passengers, who find themselves alone in a distant section of the plane... Yeah we see scary white smoke oozing out of nowhere, we see a pair of white hands, but that's it...
Most of the time, it's fine not to ipakita anything, this concept works very well in the Paranormal Activity series for example, or in The Possession of Michael King. Because since you cannot make a clear image of the threat in the movie, you subconsciously project your deepest fears into a shady silhouette for instance.
However, I believe that in this articular setting (an airplane), it would have been nice to actually see something. But that's just my opinion.
Anyways, moving on... after a few passengers put their heads together, they figure out the strange happenings must be caused sa pamamagitan ng the dead guy's spirit, so they go through his stuff. They find a creepy looking doll in the wooden box and the goth girl (who's an expert on death) explains it's a death doll and since the guy died so suddenly, he needs to let go of all the things that tie him to this world, in order to ilipat on... obviously the spirit doesn't want to let go.
Things get interesting when even the flight crew, including the pilot vanishes into thin air... and here comes the peak! The revelation! The twist! The twist that surprised me a little to be honest. I was expecting some sort of twist at the end, but not exactly this M. Knight Shayamalan kind of twist: THEY ARE ALL DEAD! The entire plane! No one survived that sudden de-pressurizing event of the cabin, they all suffocated! The ghost plane have been running on auto pilot for several hours and since their deaths happened so abruptly, the spirits were still lingering on the plane, until they let go of everything that tied them here.
All right, let's sum up: although I was looking pasulong to this movie, 7500 left me a bit disappointed after all. The playtime was too short, 1 oras 15 minutos was simply not enough to unfold the story correctly, especially not with a 30 minuto exposition where nothing happens, but some chat. The movie managed to miss quite a few opportunities that were ibingiay sa pamamagitan ng the unique setting. The disappearances of the passengers was not explained correctly, I really had no idea what was going on until the very end. The visuals and the sound effects could have been better, not to mention the background music. It didn't really feel like a horror movie at all.
Positives? Yeah, it definitely had some. As I said, the main setting of an airliner is pretty unique, I mean, where could you run from a ghost in a fucking plane?! The twist at the end was unexpected and awesome too. And it was refreshing to see unfamiliar faces on the screen for once. Well, I knew Amy Smart and Leslie Bibb, but their presence wasn't really that important. Amy Smart got old btw. :D
So, all in all I can recommend this movie for a one time view with a good heart, because of it's unique setting and great twist at the end, but it's too short, the storyline is quite confusing sometimes and it lacks good visuals, sounds effects and soundtrack. I would have expected something better from the director of the Grudge.
I give this horror movie 3.5/6 airliners.
