We all know that when it comes to being One Direction\'s biggest cheerleader, Simon Cowell is right up there, but the X Factor boss has revealed that there\'s more to their relationship than meets the eye.

While 1D\'s contract with his record label, Syco, has always seemed pretty set it stone, Simon\'s revealed that two years ago the lads were actually offered a whole pile more money by other labels to jump ship and re-sign with them.

Of course they didn\'t and Simon reckons it has a lot to do with the very personal relationship he has with the lads.

"The way I look at it with One Direction is that we\'ve had five fantastic years and they\'re totally exhausted," he tells the Mail on Sunday\'s Event magazine about their hiatus.

"They need time out, but they will all be fine and if they want to come back, they will. If not, they\'re all going to be OK.

"I\'ve got a proper relationship with them, not just business," he adds. "They actually came out of their contract with me two years ago. They got offers for way more money from other record companies.

"Everyone jumped in. They could have really turned the screw on me if they\'d wanted to but they didn\'t waver for a second, they stuck with me because we have a relationship."

When he found out that Zayn was intending to leave the band, Simon says his immediate worry was for the other four guys and to make sure they had the support they needed to move forwards they way they wanted.

"I knew Zayn was going before it happened," Simon says. "He was unhappy. My concern was actually for the boys. Zayn wasn\'t in a great place but it was his decision to leave, he wasn\'t kicked out. He wanted to distance himself. My responsibility was to the boys because they had no warning."​

His support doesn\'t end there and Simon\'s also spoken out again about the very personal advice he had for Louis when he found out about Briana Jungwirth\'s pregnancy, what with having dealt with a fairly similar set of circumstances himself.

"When Louis got the call he was going to be a dad, I was the person he spoke to," he explains. "He was nervous. I said \'Look Louis, I\'ve been there, but you\'ve just got to actually love it. And as a man you\'ve got to deal with it. You have a responsibility now; you have a purpose.\'"
