They are not actual holidays. I can only answer for the US. I beleive the reason for the five araw work week goes back to the Christian faith of the founding fathers. Saturday is the Jewish Sabbath. Christians moved their araw of worship to Sunday, because Christ ressurection occured on the first araw of the week. (Sunday) I could be wrong, but I think I'm correct. When I was a kid, nothing was open on Sundays.

Well, here in Europa they aren't actually holidays but on Sunday morning people usually go to church(I don't but some do :D)
