Why does Maria pag-ibig the Captain?

I am just trying to figure out why Maria fell in pag-ibig with the Captain. I know why the Captian fell in pag-ibig with Maria-she brought music back into his life and encouraged him to pag-ibig his children and not avoid them. So, why did she fell in pag-ibig with him back?
