I saw lots of similarities this episode! Especially between the brothers Klaus-Elijah & Stefan-Damon. My opinion is that Elijah is alot like Damon.

Elijah loved Katherine, but she was with his brother Klaus.
Damon loves Elena, but she is with his brother Stefan.
