The Walking Dead’s Rick and Michonne ever going to get romantically involved? The two characters have demonstrated some great chemistry, so the question naturally came up when we sat down with the cast and writers for The Walking Dead Comic-Con press roundtables. While Danai Gurira spoke of the intimate friendship between her character and Rick, Andrew Lincoln did offer a shred of hope on the matter… well, kind of.
When asked about a possible romance between Michonne and Rick, Danai Gurira seemed amused and pleased that “people want Michonne to get some,” though she attributes at least some of that to the two characters being male and female, and both “presumably straight,” but she went on to note that there’s a connection between her character and Rick, and that Rick was the one to really push Michonne to move in a better direction…
There’s a friendship there that is really what I think I treasure about Michonne’s connection with Rick. He really was the one who challenged her to step out of who she was being and what she was becoming. Gurira noted that Michonne had to become more humbled, and that the character went through all that because of Rick. As a result, they gained trust and respect for one another.
Executive producer Gale Anne Hurd added on to that by reminding us that Rick needed direction too, and last season it was Michonne nudging him in the right direction…
The tables were turned at the end of last season, where he was going to a place where it wasn’t serving him, it wasn’t serving them, and it wasn’t serving the Alexandrians. And she basically had to knock him out. All of that points to Michonne and Rick being just-friends, at least, that’s all Danai Gurira is claiming for now…
I think they’re really, really great friends, and that’s a cool thing. But where does Andrew Lincoln stand on the issue? He answered the question by talking about the humor and “jokiness” between Rick and Michonne.
She’s one of the few people that can take the piss out of Rick, which is great. She’s the arched eyebrow kind of smart-ass remark. It’s perhaps that chemistry, mixed with how badass they both are that makes some fans wish to see more romantic sparks between them. But if that’s happening anytime soon, neither Gurira nor Lincoln are willing to fess up. But Andrew Lincoln did offer a sliver of hope in the form of a humorous add-on to his comments on the subject…
There aren’t that many people in the apocalypse, so maybe when everybody is dead and it’s just me and her, like… let’s get it on. So, you’re saying there’s a chance?!
