Ginnifer Goodwin goes from being animated in real life to on the big screen in Disney’s Zootopia
Extreme and Ginnifer Goodwin don’t usually fit in the same sentence unless you’re describing a specific career transition.
The 37-year-old went from playing Margie Heffman, the third wife in the polygamous family on HBO’s Big Love, to Snow White in the Disney production of Once Upon a Time.
As it is, Once Upon a Time is still going strong. So is Goodwin who makes a more suitable transformation from Once Upon a Time to the voice of bunny Judy Hopps in the Mouse House’s latest animated motion picture Zootopia.
In the 3D movie, the cartoon world is populated by animal species in which prey and predators live side by side without fear. That is until some diabolical villain interferes with the delicate balance motivating some predators to revert.
It is up to meter maid cop Hopps (Goodwin) and con artist fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) to solve the mystery and save the Zootopia metropolis from anarchy.
Goodwin, who is pregnant with her second child, made herself available to talk about Zootopia, and her obsession with all things Disney, during a recent Skype conversation from L. A.
“I was sitting in my kitchen in Vancouver — Vancouver’s where we shoot Once Upon a Time — and my agent who handles voice jobs called,” says Goodwin. “I thought I was getting fired because I was working on Tinker Bell and Legend of the Neverbeast.”
On her reaction to being offered another Disney job:
“So they said, ‘It’s Disney,’ and I said, ‘I’m in.’ And they said, ‘Don’t you want to know about the role?’ I said, ‘No, I’ll do it.\'”
On what she was wearing when she accepted Disney’s Zootopia offer:
“This is going to sound like BS,” Goodwin says. “I was in Mickey Mouse pajamas; red Mickey Mouse pajamas that had my name embroidered on them that my mother gave me.”
On being overly optimistic just like her Judy Hopps character:
“I feel like I’m animated in real life,” she says. “I’m typecast, which I’m all for. Judy and I overlap on most of our qualities.”
“It came from just learning how to act with only my voice,” Goodwin says. “There’s something difficult about not having your facial expression, body language, a costume and props to connect with.”
“I wasted everyone’s time, because his comedic timing is impeccable,” she says. “I would start cackling, and I would ruin takes of his, and apologize, and then I would do it again.”
On getting time off from Once Upon a Time filming to do Zootopia recording sessions in Vancouver:
“Judy articulates it in the movie — anyone can be anything,” says Goodwin. “Judy also takes responsibility for her actions…I hope kids pick up on that.”

On comparing live action with voice work:
“In live action it’s about me being a control freak and protecting my character from everyone else,” she says.
“They created such a safe place to be free,” she says. “And I felt like I could really try anything and really fall on my face.”
“Well, I’ve been begging for a Zootopia sequel,” Goodwin says. “Disney has not confirmed it will happen, but I keep begging.”
