Chapter 16

(Warning some scenes may be too explicit and contains course language)

Sam Winchester had been busily rummaging in the basement with Sarah Blake, looking for any signs of weapons or tools they could use in case of a shortage. Bullets for all of the Winchesters’ mga baril were nearly scarce thanks to their run in with a zombified crowd of hungry patients and staff back at Little Falls hospital. In a time like this it’s not good to be packing minimal heat, especially when it was the only thing that could keep you alive. Usually Sam and his brother were better equipped for any battle, storing all the weapons they needed whenever they embarked on a new hunt but this time was different….they were running with a small group of survivors.

Sam was optimistic when he found a radio hiding behind a cluster of boxes. He pulled it out and started fumbling with the knobs checking to see if it was still intact. For a segundo the young hunter was hoping to pick up on some voices, which would indicate madami survivors during the devastation. But all he heard was static. As Sarah planted herself against his chest he looked back at the wavering unknown wallowing in her rhinestone blue eyes.

“So far I’ve found nothing.” Sam huffed, putting his arms around the young woman. “And this radio is useless, no one is talking. I’m starting to feel like we really are the last people on earth.”

“I don’t wanna think like that.” Sarah applied. “It’s too depressing and besides if I start to worry I’ll go insane. My dad still hasn’t returned my calls, none of my other mga kaibigan or co-workers at the Gallery received any of my messages.” She swallowed hard, tipping her head into Sam’s shoulder. “And this whole thing with Kay’s ability, dead people walking about; not to mention your resurrected teenaged brother with an angel living inside his body…it’s just getting harder to handle. Too much and too fast you know.”

“Welcome to my world.” Sam sinabi shuffling through the chaotic room of stuffed shelves and musty old boxes filled with personal items and antiques. It pagtunaw like stale ketchup chips and mud; provoking him to wrinkle his nose madami than he cared. “I’m still curious as to why an archangel is so interested in Kay’s ability. Adam’s not saying a word to either of us which doesn’t leave a whole lot of options at this point.”

“What about your friend…that guy in the trench-coat?”

Sam cocked an eyebrow at Sarah, immediately thinking of the person she was referring to. “Castiel? I haven’t heard from him since Dean and I left the hospital to pick up Adam on the highway. Cas was so secretive the last time we saw him…it was like he was hiding something from us though I don’t know what.”

“Is it possible that he’s hiding something about Kay?” Sarah asked impatiently. “What if he knew all this was gonna happen…that this virus mutated from Kay’s blood would escape out of that hospital.”

Sam shook his head. “No, as much as I’ve been feeling suspicious of him lately, I don’t think he’d ever hide something that crucial from us. I mean…the guy put his life on the line to save my brother and I multiple times, he even rebelled against Heaven so…I’m not about to start accusations.”

Sarah squared her shoulders, running her fingers through her soft brown hair. She admired the faith Sam had in his family and mga kaibigan but underneath it was like walking into a blind alley. Far as she could tell this angel Castiel was a loyal and trusted friend of the brothers…so what would make them doubt him now? Aside from being MIA since the dead apocalypse started, Castiel really didn’t leave the boys any reason to feel discouraged…though as Sam had mentioned the angel was pagganap very conspicuous the last time he was around.

“Sam, I know you wanna believe he’s still your friend,” she sinabi heavily, tugging on his sleeve. “But Cas was away the entire time after you…well I’m just basing this on what you’ve told me, he didn’t appear until that araw at the hospital…did he?”

“Dean sinabi he went back to Heaven shortly after what happened with Lucifer and Michael. He became some sort of new angel-sheriff.”

“All the madami reason to be aware of his actions.” Sarah reminded Sam, digging into one of the boxes. “I’m not saying he’s part of the world going to hell, but I wouldn’t dismiss the idea that he’s keeping something from you and your brother…something to do with Kay.”

Sam had to laugh bitterly towards Sarah’s haste accusation about his guardian angel. What did she know about Castiel or what he’d done in the past for the brothers? This girl only met him once and it was under drastic circumstances. As much as Sam’s feelings progressed for Sarah, she knew very little about the people he trusted.

“What makes you say that?” he pondered.

Sarah shrugged. “I don’t know….it’s just the way he looked suspiciously at her…. There was a moment I thought I saw something in his eyes that made me worry.” Suddenly she spotted some candles while digging through the boxes, perfect time to change the subject. “Jackpot, I found us some candles!”

Sam sourly glanced at the enthusiastic Sarah, holding up an arm full of candle sticks. “Okay, what exactly are we gonna do with those?”

Sarah smiled at the tall Winchester and tapped his shoulder with a candle tip. “You know, in case of a blackout. Or maybe we could use them to warn off a zombie horde.” The “Z-word” seemed to make her cringe when she chuckled. “Trust me they’re good to have for emergencies.”

“So you’ve…had some experience in zombie-apocalypses before?”

“Yah I’m afraid my knowledge comes from the movies.” Sarah joked, winking at him coyly. “Fire and the basic shoot-them-in-the-head method are pretty much all I know.”

“I’ve gotta say I’m surprised you’re taking this whole end-of-the-world-thing so well.” Sam pointed out grabbing another box with fresh canned goods they could use on the road if they had to leave the house permanently. “Most people would’ve Nawawala their minds seeing the things Dean and I face all the time. Sometimes while we’re on a hunt, I start to wonder if we really have gone crazy.”

Sarah sighed collecting her thoughts. There was conflict in her expression which Sam couldn’t figure out. The mask she wore was thicker than cement, if there really was fear and anxiety this girl was really good at hiding it.

“Someone has to be the sane person in this group.” she admitted sorely. “If it’s gotta be me…so be it. Besides thinking about what’s going on now, worrying about Kay…and even being close to you again…let’s just say I’m not handling it as well as you imagine.”

Sam tipped his head starring softly into Sarah’s sparkling blue eyes. He couldn’t tell exactly what she was feeling between them at that moment but a thought occurred to him back at the hospital. They’d shared a heated disagreement about the danger she and Kay would be in if they involved themselves in the Winchester’s lives. It wasn’t that Sam wanted to isolate himself from other people; he’d just been led to think that living separate from the rest of the world protected those from harm. He never wanted to see anything happen to Sarah, especially with the undead apocalypse escalating.

“Hey look,” he began when her back was turned to him. “I’m sorry about before…about what I sinabi at the hospital.”

Sarah just understandably wavered off the topic. “Sam its fine…really I’m okay. You just want to protect me from all the horrible things you face…I get it.”

Sam bit his lip, absorbed sa pamamagitan ng the liquid glaze in her stare. He knew in an instant that she was hurting…not just because of what he’d sinabi to her…but because of what he never sinabi all those years he stayed away. He’d cut her out of his life and now the consequences of his actions were haunting him. Being here with Sarah had rekindled the feelings he felt for her the first time they met…except now those feelings had grown uncontrollably stronger.
“No I…I was an ass…Sarah.” He sinabi heavily resting his palms on her slender shoulders, running his fingers through her soft brown hair. “I never wanted to shut you out…. It’s been a while since I was close to anyone in my life… When Jessica died I guess…I guess a part of me died with her…”

Sarah gently touched his face, tracing her tiny fingers along his cheeks. “When I never heard from you again… I’m not gonna lie I-I was hurt. I thought we’d shared a connection…and when you disappeared without a word…I felt like a piece of me was ripped away.” She inhaled back the on-coming tears gazing deeply into the tall young man. “You have no idea how hard it was for me to make that call…to hear your voice again…”

“I’m glad you did.” Sam confessed as they touched foreheads. “Because then…I never would’ve had the chance to tell you… I don’t wanna run anymore Sarah…”

“Then don’t run now…” Unexpectedly she planted her soft lips against his, halik him passionately. The candle sticks in her arms had fallen out of her grasp as she slid her hands around his neck and through his shaggy dark hair. He responded sa pamamagitan ng holding her tighter in his arms, halik her cheeks and then on her mouth. Both of them could predict where this movement was going as Sam slightly disengaged himself pulling off his sando to reveal his beautifully chiseled abs. Cupping Sarah’s face in his palms he kissed her hungrily as the two of them collapsed together on the floor…with the radio slightly crackling in the background.

Upstairs on the main floor, Dean was relieved to find Kay puttering around in the kusina fixing her a sandwich, with all the delicious ingredients enough to make his mouth water. Adam was busy packing boxes of supplies out to the impala that Sam and Sarah had brought up before disappearing into the basement. “It’s good to be on the ligtas side,” Dean thought to himself; but now his main concern was the attractive young empath who’d been avoiding him since that morning.

Who could blame her? He was way out of line when he shouted at her and yet…he still tried to convince himself that he’d acted out of care. Something was different about Dean as he slowly approached the kusina mesa staring at the girl throwing things together in her sandwich. He was still the same cocky, wise-cracking hunter with the GED and the give-em-hell-attitude….but somehow Kay had managed to bring out a softer side in him…a side he’d never shown any woman.

The madami time he’d spent with her, the longer he protected her from whatever wanted her dead…the madami Dean’s affections had progressed. Kay was like a deserted island to him…an island he’d never explored thoroughly…and now being here with her made his puso run wild. Dean was never the guy you’d go to for a commitment but this girl had managed to reveal a kinder, sweeter nature to the young hunter’s persona.

Was it her innocence that beguiled him or her mysterious and tragic curse that weakened his soul? Whatever the reason Kay Forster had awakened something deep within Dean that he’d always thought was long dead. And now all he thought about was being closer to her…paralyzed sa pamamagitan ng her presence.

“Please stop that!” Kay cried sporadically, dropping the mantikilya kutsilyo in her had that she’d been using on her slice of bread. “You’re emotions are giving me whiplash.”

Dean unnervingly jolted during her sudden outburst. The guilt was consuming his handsome face. “Sorry…guess I sorta forgot you go all ultra absorbent on people…kinda like a human-version of…paper towel.”

“You mean the Bounty-version.” The empath girl threw at him as she glanced over her shoulder to the young hunter grinning helplessly. “Only with a madami powerful absorbing effect.”

Dean humbly shrugged, while they laughed at the joke as he shuffled towards the opposite side of the counter Kay was leaning against.

“So what’s on the menu in Hell’s kusina today?” he pointed out, referring to the sanwits she’d been creating in front of her. “I’d ask for a bite but I figured it’d be better to avoid the angry chef response.”

“Oh we wouldn’t want that.” Kay snickered, throwing bits of chicken on tuktok of the butter, lettuce, tomato, mustard and Swiss cheese. “Although if I were chef Ramsey and this was Hell’s kusina I’d probably tell you to get your asno out of here sa pamamagitan ng now.” Again they both laughed, but Kay’s cheeks blushed bright red when saw the glimmer of guilt in his eyes. “So Dean….what brings you here anyway?”

“An apology…actually it’s a sore attempt at an apology…which I basically suck at.” The young hunter admitted timidly. “But then I thought uy what the hell…might as well give it a shot.”

Kay paused, eyes focused at the incomplete sanwits displayed on a plate between them. It was as if staring at him would weaken the pader she’d put up whenever she started feeling vulnerable around anyone. But if someone could make that pader deteriorate…it was definitely the one person she wanted in her life madami than anyone…Dean Winchester.

He swallowed hard, silently hoping she at least acknowledge his gaze. “Look ah… I know I was a little harsh to you this morning…I’m sorry for that,” he admitted bluntly. “It’s just that…with everything that’s been going on in the world…the virus and your powers…the last thing I want is another person’s death on my conscience.”

Kat quickly batted her gentle eyelashes at the robust young hunter, presuming back to building up her sandwich. Then she let out a loud sigh, sweeping some hair behind her ears.

“So…the only reason you’re so concerned about me…is because it’s your job.” The empath girl waited for his reaction when she noticed his slightly stunned expression. Dean’s brow had bent indicated a hint of sadness in his eyes. “Did I get that right?”

“No.” Dean retorted as Kay turned away from his, running the container of mantikilya back to the fridge. “I mean yes my job is to keep you ligtas for as long as possible but…that’s not my only reason, Kay.”

Shutting the fridge door, the empath girl froze in her spot leaning her head against the frame. Dean stood back at the counter waiting impatiently, puso in his throat. What could he say to make her understand? What was he working so fiercely hard not to say to her? Then she strolled towards her nakaraan position at the counter, mouth partially open but confused as to what she’d say back to him.

“Then what other reason…could you possibly have besides feeling sorry for me?” Kay replied cynically, her soft voice made it easy for the young hunter to detect her pain. “Cause you know…your emotions are kind of scrambled Dean. I can barely understand any of it…but the madami I try to the madami I…” she’d immediately forbidden herself to speak her heart’s secret. Dean could hardly contain his curiosity to learn what lingered within her eyes.

As he gazed at the young empath girl, separated from him only sa pamamagitan ng the counter, he lowered his head biting down on his lower lip. Seeing such pain in her face tugged excruciatingly at his chest, making the words formulating in this throat die slowly. Dean had never known such vulnerability, his entire life was about fearing nothing and now…the one person who weakened his defenses was none other than this strange and innocent girl standing inches from him. Kay Forster had made him feel things that a hunter should never feel for anyone outside the job… Though he internally fought against his emotions…it was impossible to keep the lie visible when it was already obvious to him.

“I can’t… Kay I don’t want to hurt you.” He suddenly blurted, Nawawala in the misery of his mind. The empath girl put her hand to her mouth, reluctant to allow her feelings for Dean betray her. “Ever since I met you it’s been…well let’s just say it’s been one hell of a ride from the start.” The young hunter sadly smiled back at her then frowned, folding his hands together on the counter surface. “I don’t know what’s going to happen from here on out…cause I sure as hell can’t see that far but…I do know that whatever I feel at this very moment…it could become a complication that I’m just not ready to take on.”

Kay nodded bitterly, tears swimming in her brown eyes which she quickly wiped away with her sleeve. “You don’t have to explain.” She said; voice breaking as was Dean’s puso while he watched her pinch the tears back with her fingers. “I already feel it…I sort of always knew deep down that whatever this connection was…it would just be impossible.” Kay inhaled the sorrow pushing it back inside before she exposed it. “Aside from what’s going on outside this house…we live different lives…”

“Kay…” Dean struggled to say.

“So for now…we’ll just be mga kaibigan and leave it at that.” The empath girl impulsively finished. She didn’t want to hear his excuses or his reasons for agreeing or disagreeing with her decision to forget the way she felt about him. It was too hard and painful enough to pine for Dean as long as he had an obligation to protect her. What about the mother of his son? For all she know he was still committed to her.

“Okay…are you sure?” he was searching her face, though Kay fought to keep the mask on. “I mean…you seem kind of upset.”

“It’s the dust, just a little dust in my eyes…nothing to worry about.” She chuckled. Dean was hardly convinced. He recognized the grief in her exterior the moment he gently gave her the brush off…it was almost too paralyzing to bear. Then she smiled plainly at Dean, eyes a little swollen, and cut her sanwits in half to offer it to him. “Here…you look like you could use it.”

“You sure you don’t mind?”

“Excuse me, but have you heard what your stomach sounds like? It’s almost like hearing an obnoxious jamboree.”

“Very cute sweetheart, now hand it over.” They both laughed, and took a bite of their sandwiches.

Dean was practically devouring his half, crumbs of chicken dropping from the bread. It was so delicious and instantly reminded him of his mother. Mary Winchester always made the most scrumptious sandwiches…definitely something the young hunter missed. While chewing, Dean and Kay kept exchanging tentative glances. The hidden affection between the two seemed to spread like a vicious poison.

“Mmmm, this is the best sanwits I’ve had in a long time.” Dean complimented Kay between bites. “Way better than one of those Happy Meals at Ronald MacDonald’s. That clown’s a joke when it comes to food.”

“Well I’m glad my ability to make sandwiches is enough to impress you.” Kay snickered, swallowing another bite the bread.

“Kay you could do just about anything and it would impress me.”

The empath girl glared at him playfully. “Are you actually flirting with me Dean?”

“Being an empath…I’m sure you’d be able to figure it out.” Dean replied coolly, giving Kay a sly wink.

Kay laughed braking off a piece of her sanwits and tossing it at the handsome hunter’s forehead. “Shut up.” This reaction had taken aback the young man, encouraging him to throw a piece back at her.

“Hey, what are we like nine here?” he chuckled as Kay threw another piece at him, which he dodged. “You did not just throw a piece of chicken at my head.”

“Oh I think I did.” Kay gleefully taunted as Dean sprung from his spot chasing her around the kitchen. With every piece they threw, their laughter had lit up like an unattainable spark of fireworks. Even as the young hunter wrapped his arms around the struggling girl, practically wrestling with him in fun, his puso would pound fiercely. Dean wanted to hold onto Kay for as long as he could hold on to this moment. But when the dust settled and the sky went dark again…emotions lingered as the empath girl timidly peered back into the young hunter’s steel gaze.

Unable to contain himself, Dean gently touched Kay’s cheek with his palm, tracing his fingers down the creamy surface of her porselana face. He could feel a hunger growing within him a need that forced him closer to her inviting mouth. Kay swallowed shyly, bracing herself as Dean held her in his alluring green eyes. But just as gravity pulled them closer, the young hunter dizzily shook off the impulse creating puwang between him and the appalled girl.

“Sorry…” he whispered. “I don’t know what got into me there.”

Kay bit her lip, enclosing her thin arms protectively around her body. A red streak of embarrassment flared up across her innocent face. Then she wiped her mouth, as though there was residue from the phantom halik they shared.

“No, it was my fault.” She assured him, twiddling her fingers in her dark hair. “I got carried away.”

Adam Milligan unexpectedly came trudging into the kusina to grab a serbesa out of the fridge, starring at his brother and the empath girl menacingly. “Am I interrupting something here?”

Sam and Sarah cuddled together on the floor with only their jackets covering the exposed flesh of their bodies. The wet perspiration still shined from the face down, indicating a pleasuring glow of happiness. This was the first time Sam and Sarah had ever made pag-ibig together in a basement…it was actually the first time they were together at all. Looking back into Sarah’s dazed eyes; Sam kissed her forehead stroking his fingers through her hair. The young woman returned the affection sa pamamagitan ng enclosing her arms around his chest refusing to relinquish her grip.

“Remind me to vent to you the susunod time.” She chuckled, tracing her index finger over Sam’s chest down to the ripple of his abs. “Something tells me…this kind of thing doesn’t happen a lot for you….with what you do.”

“I guess it’s because…I’ve never really allowed myself to be close to anyone.” Sam admitted, feeling her hot breath against his skin which soothed him. “When you’re a hunter…relationships are just a complication…a life I’m not meant to have.”

Sarah stared sorely at the young man; leaning on his shoulder searching through his expressions. “Sam, everybody deserves balances in their lives…even you and your brother. The trick is to stop fighting…with what’s in front of you.”

“I wish I could…but I’m afraid it’s too far gone.” there was a deafening sadness when he spoke. “The only life I’ve ever known…is this job….this saving lives and hunting things…. I tried to have a life outside of all the crap I grew around…and in the end someone very close to me died.” Sam swallowed hard, biting back the anguish in his words. “I tried to be selfish in thinking I could beat my family’s curse but instead…everything I touch…everything I love….it all gets taken away from me.”

“I’m still here.” Sarah reminded the young hunter, cupping his face in her palm. Sam’s were glazed in pain, though he tried to smile at her. “I’m not running away.”

Sam exhaled halik the skin on her hand, and then rubbed her shoulder. “Sarah I…” Before he could find the right consoling words, she’d planted her lips on his mouth and kissed him gently. As passion began to slowly erupt between them, the radio left on one of the closed boxes began to crackle. Sam broke away, lifting his head up just as a person’s voice broke the sound barrier.

“Hello! Hello is anybody out there!”

Sam immediately cranked the knob and replied back into the receiving end. “Yes I’m here, come in.”

“Sam what is it?” Sarah pondered sitting right side up, supporting her arms on his strong shoulder.

“Oh god, I’m with a few other survivors and we need help over here pronto!” cried the speaker. “There’s monsters all over the place, they’re killing everyone in site! Please help!”

“Okay, okay calm down.” Sam sinabi excitably, struggling to lower his tone. “Where are you located?”
